7 money saving tips to get you through the summer

Sweating the small stuff can add up to big savings.

Record gas and electricity prices may have you feeling like you’re headed for a budget meltdown this summer. But chill out: there are plenty of tricks to keep the warming trend from hitting your wallet. Here are seven ways to save until September:

1. Sweat a little, save a lot.
Moving your thermostat up one degree could mean a three percent reduction in your home cooling costs. Replace your air filters at least every three months. Use your ceiling fans, and wait until evening to run heat-generating appliances, such as the dryer and dishwasher.

2. Make every drop count.
Turn your sprinklers on early in the morning, when less water will be lost to evaporation. And remember that your lawn may need less water than you think: in most parts of the country one inch per week is plenty, so one good rain storm may mean you can turn off the spigot and lower your water bill. Find out exactly how much water your lawn is getting by setting out an empty can within range of the sprinkler. Once the water depth in the can reaches one-inch, you are done for the week.

3. Play the percentages at the pump.
Keeping your car’s tires properly inflated can cut your gas mileage by as much as 3 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Save more by regularly changing your air filter (10 percent), getting a tune up (4 percent) and using the manufacturer-recommended grade of oil (1 to 2 percent).

4. Hunt for garage sale gold.
Summer is the season of church bazaars and yard sales. Set your alarm clock for early on Saturday morning to get the best bargains. Expect to go to several before you find what you need, but consider that part of the fun.

5. Admission: free if possible.
It seems nearly every city, town, village and shopping center offers some kind of free summer entertainment --- including outdoor movies, concerts and festivals. Local, state and national parks can also be affordable gems.

6. Throw a sharing soiree.
Entertaining is a popular part of summer, but it can be expensive. Throw a potluck party and ask your friends to bring their favorite side dish or dessert. Give it a clever theme to make your guests forget that they are footing part of the bill: at an International Night bash, each guest could bring a traditional entrée from his or her assigned country.

7. Squeeze your summer travel dollar.
A little bit of work can save you a lot of money on your vacation. Research the best deals for hotels, airfare and rental cars online. Consider booking a villa or condo with kitchen facilities and forgo restaurant food at least a few times. Use public transportation, rather than renting a car, if possible.
