Choosing which college or university to attend is a big deal. You and your parents may have been anticipating this for many years, or you may have just decided to start saving money to fund your education. Regardless, keep these things in mind when choosing the right school for your budget.
Public or private?
If you are looking at both public and private colleges and universities, you should keep in mind that usually private institutions cost more than public institutions. You can usually save yourself a bundle of money if you choose a college or university that is public. But, you should also keep in mind what schools offer programs that you want. Don’t forget that just because a university is public, it does not mean that it is not competitive. Some of the best universities in the country are state schools.
In-state or out-of-state?
One of the most important determinants of whether you are going to be able to afford college is your decision to stay in the state in which you have residency or attend a school in another state. If you stay in your home state and choose a public school, chances are good that you will pay a considerable amount less than if you went to a college or university in another state. Out-of-state tuition for public schools is usually considerably more expensive, and most public schools accept a lower percentage of students from out-of-state than they do in-state. You may want to look into reciprocity programs in which neighboring states award each other in-state tuition at each state’s respective institutions.
Ways to save
One good way to save money on college is to apply for scholarships and grants. This money does not have to be repaid and it can cover anything from a small amount of tuition to your entire college career. You can find out about grants and scholarships from your high school or college guidance counselor.
Another good way to save money on your college expenses is to look into your local community college system This can give you the freedom to live at home and save money while you are taking classes and then transfer your credits into a four-year college or university once you have completed the requirement for general education. Community colleges are usually less expensive than other colleges or universities and can help you ease into college life.
