Family room decorating on a budget
Ideas to help you decorate your family room on a budget
Decorating the family room, or great room, for a mature family can be a challenge. You have to try to meet the needs of your teenage children as well as the adults in your family. It can be hard to please such a wide range of tastes. Consider the following when it comes to decorating your family room.
What teenagers need
- A place to hang out with their friends without adults hovering over their shoulders
- A spot to watch movies, watch TV, play video games, and eat
What the parents need
- A place to relax at the end of the day
- A family room that is orderly and doesn’t resemble a teenager’s room
- A space that works with the idea that their kids want to hang out in their own house
How to make it work
There are lots of decorating ideas that can help in creating a family room that meets the needs of all of the members of your family. With a little planning and striking a balance, it is possible to create a family room for all.
- Storage. Teenagers like DVDs and video games. Instead of having DVD cases and game controllers strewn about the family room, find some good storage solutions. There are small cabinets that can house DVDs and CDs. If your TV is in an armoire, that makes storage even easier. If you find the right storage, it can add to the decorating of your family room.
- Décor. If your plan is for your teenagers to actually want to hang out in your family room, then it cannot feel like a museum. Shelves lined with knickknacks and collectibles do not make for good decorating and are unappealing to teenagers. It makes the room too cluttered, also. Remember that less is more. Instead, pick out one or two pieces that are your favorites and display those. Also, lots of pictures of the family and kids can make the room too cluttered. It can also be a drawback if you are trying to encourage your teenage kids to hang out with their friends in your family room – lots of pictures of them growing up will embarrass a teenager.
- Paint. One of the cheapest and easiest ways to change the look of a room is with paint. Painting the family room is a great decorating idea. Choose a fun color that compliments your furniture and décor. It is a good idea to test the color on a small spot in the room, but if you do paint the room and decide that you hate it, you can always repaint it.
When decorating a family room, keep in mind that all members of the family want to use it. Try to decorate it so that it meets the needs of all of the family. Then, you can have a room that you can all enjoy.
