Decorating a child's room on a budget

Planning and creativity can help keep you with your decorating budget.

Decorating a child's room can be a challenge, especially on a budget. A few inexpensive decorating ideas can help you to create a room that the kids enjoy and that keeps clutter at bay.

Theme
Decorating with a theme is very tempting with a child's room, but it is important to avoid going overboard. A room saturated with everything from the latest popular kid’s movie quickly becomes outdated. Also, bunnies and teddy bears on the walls are outgrown before you know it. Instead, choose a theme that is subtle – perhaps a color scheme or a nature theme. Choose something that can grow with the child so that you are not starting over with your decorating in a couple of years.

Storage
The biggest problem in a child's room is keeping it clean. Kids are messy, and their toys create even more mess. The trick to handling this problem with decorating is to add sufficient storage to the room. Baskets are a perfect solution. These are attractive and can hold toys so that they are not scattered everywhere. Also, it is easier for small children to clean up with baskets. They simply throw the toys into the open containers instead of having to find the right drawer or shelf.

Also, consider under the bed storage and the closet when decorating the kid’s room. You can buy plastic bins that slide under the bed which you can use to store clothes or toys. Stackable plastic bins can be a good choice for storage in the closet. If everything has its place, it makes it so much easier to keep the room clean and allows your decorating to pay off.

Décor
When decorating and choosing the décor, keep the theme in mind. If you want to incorporate some trends, keep expenses down by selecting only small accent pieces. Since it will soon be out-of-date, you'll have avoided investing a lot of money in something you are going to replace anyway. Again, try to decorate with décor that can grow with the child or be inexpensively replaced.

Kids’ collections can pose a problem when decorating. Children love to have collections, which can grow rapidly. Instead of trying to display all 150 seashells, toy cars, or model horses, have the child pick out their few favorites to display on a shelf for decorating and store the rest where they can be accessed easily. This reduces the clutter but also allows the child to enjoy their collection.

It is possible to have a neat, well-decorated kid’s room. Have a sense of purpose and focus on organizing. You’ll find it makes decorating a kid’s room much easier than you thought.
