Trips back and forth to the hardware store add frustration and time to your DIY project. Do some prep work beforehand so that you can be sure that you have everything that you need before you begin.

2. Not adequately preparing your job site.
Part of the prep work for a project where you do it yourself includes not only making sure that you have the right materials, but also making sure that your job site is ready. If walls need to be prepped or floors protected, be sure to do that before beginning -- not after you have already started.

3. Cutting corners on materials.
One of the real benefits of a project that where you do it yourself is saving money, but don’t be so focused on cutting costs that you skimp on materials. Buying quality materials will help you avoid regret later when your do-it-yourself project looks well done.

4. Not getting the necessary permits.
If your do-it-yourself project requires permits, it can be a costly mistake to forget to apply for them. It is much better to obtain the permits up front instead of paying stiff fines for failing to comply with city ordinances.

5. Working beyond your capabilities.
Another common mistake to avoid you take on a do-it-yourself project, is to think that your capabilities are beyond what they actually are. Don’t take on too much. Be realistic about your time and abilities. Don’t be embarrassed to call in a professional if you realize that, as it turns out, you can’t quite do it yourself.

A little preparation can go a long way in making your project as successful as possible when you do it yourself.
