You feel inspired to give your home a makeover. But you don’t have thousands of dollars to spend. There is an alternative. You can get a big bang for your decorating buck with the following simple projects.
Repaint the walls
You can dramatically change the look of your home for very little money by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room a different color can give it a completely new look. Not only are there a myriad of color choices to choose from but you might also want to consider using a special technique such as sponge painting to give your walls a faux finish. You can pick up books that explain how to do it from your local hardware store. Some stores even have how-to classes available that you can sign up for.
Add decorative trim
Another simple home makeover is to add decorative trim. By adding a chair railing or crown molding, along with color-coordinated paint and wallpaper, you can change a room from drab to dramatic. This project can be made even easier by using pre-finished trim.
Replace hardware and/or cabinetry
Two makeovers that are likely to pay off at resale time are redoing your kitchen and bathroom. This doesn’t mean you have to hire someone to gut the entire rooms. There are some relatively easy projects that can make a huge difference. The simplest one can be to just change the hardware on the cabinetry or replace the faucets. You may also want to consider replacing any stained or out-of-date sinks, and painting, staining, or replacing your cabinetry. If you’re handy, you may be able to do some of these projects yourself for even greater savings.
Changing your flooring
Replacing your flooring or upgrading your carpets can also make a big difference. Changing the flooring in your kitchen or bathrooms from linoleum to tile, or replacing some of your carpets with hardwood, can make it seem like you almost have a new home.
