Setting up a home office

A home office is a great asset to the home and can be easy to set up.

Home offices are becoming more and more common in today’s homes. As more workers telecommute full-time or at least some of the time, a home office has become almost a necessity. If you have decided that it is time to set up your own home office, the following tips can help.

What to consider
Before setting up a home office, there are several things to consider.

  • Who will use it?  Is it primarily for one person to use only as an office, or will family members also use the space?
  • Is there existing space in your house that you can use, or will you need to add on?
  • Is the space that you have selected for your home office able to be sufficiently wired?  Can you get all of the technology that you need there?
  • Is there sufficient lighting?

What you need
With the above questions in mind, your home office needs many things.

  • Space. You have to have enough room for your home office.  Consider everything that goes there: a desk, phone, computer, filing system, lighting, room to write, bulletin board, etc.  The space that you select has to have room for all of that.  This can work in many different ways for you.  You may have an extra room that you can convert into a home office.  Or, you may have a corner of a room or even a large, walk-in closet.  Find the area that has the best space for your needs in a home office.
  • Privacy. It is hard to work if your home office is located in the family room with the television or near where the kids play.  You will have constant interruptions.  Instead, you need to find an area of your home where you can have some level of privacy.
  • Wiring. Since your home office has to support at minimum a computer and lighting, you need to make sure that the space that you select can be wired for those things.  If you are using a laptop, that gives you a little more flexibility.  Install wireless Internet in your house, and suddenly you have a lot more freedom in where you set up your home office.  Assess what technology you need for your work and have your home office sufficiently wired for it.

Before setting up a home office, take a moment to do a little planning.  Analyze the space available to you and decide what you need.  Take a trip to an office supply store to see what furniture and products are available to help you in setting up your own home office.
