Remodeling your bathroom is a great way to increase the value of your home. And it’s one where you don’t have to spend a fortune in order to make a dramatic difference.
1. List your needs
Start by listing your bathroom remodeling needs. If your existing sink and tub are still in good condition, you may be able to upgrade their look by simply replacing their fixtures. Or you can change the look of your bathroom more significantly by redoing the walls, and/or flooring. Hate your bright orange bathroom tile? Provided you use the right primer and paint, it’s possible to paint right over them and save the expense of retiling.
2. Gather ideas
Before you begin, gather as many ideas as you can. Note the various elements you like in your friends’ bathrooms. Check out new trends in magazines and design books. You can even cut out pictures and create a notebook of design ideas that you would like to implement in your own bathroom remodel.
3. Set a budget
Be sure to set a realistic budget and stick to it. If you have limited resources, a great way to save is to do as much of the project as you can yourself. You’ll find numerous helpful “how-to” books available in your local hardware store. Also, price out everything that you want to do in advance. Decide what is essential and what is non-essential and make your choices accordingly.
4. Get a building permit
If you are making significant changes or adding a bathroom, check the requirements of your local building code before you begin. It can be a very expensive mistake if you pay for a bathroom remodel and then have to pay additional fines and fees because you did not follow your local restrictions. Be proactive and find out in advance if you need a building permit for what you have in mind.
