Small kitchen renovation

Redesigning a small kitchen can be fun and easy. It can also help boost the resale value of your home.

The most popular home remodeling project is a kitchen renovation. This may be because kitchens are becoming more and more the center of family life. A renovation can help ensure your kitchen grows to suit your changing needs.

A small kitchen, however, can be a challenge to remodel. If your budget is limited, you may have to be a bit creative. Also, money constraints or building restrictions may make it impossible to increase the size of a small kitchen by knocking out a wall. But there are ways to overcome these challenges. Here are some “think big” ideas to help make your small kitchen appear larger:

Cosmetic changes
One easy way to remodel a small kitchen is through cosmetic changes. A new coat of paint or new flooring can dramatically alter its appearance and make it seem more inviting. The right shade of paint can even make your kitchen appear larger. Changing the hardware on the cabinetry, replacing the faucet or installing a new sink are all ways to give your kitchen a fresh new look. Slightly more involved projects include refinishing or replacing your cabinetry and/or counters and installing new lighting.

Space-saving changes
Perhaps your kitchen needs more than a simple facelift. To create more space in a small kitchen, you can opt for built-in appliances so, for example, you won’t have a microwave taking up precious counter space. Replacing your cabinetry or adding extra shelving may also be a way to create more space. And purchasing a rollout pantry or island can give you more flexibility in your storage and workspace.

Before you begin, gather as many ideas as you can from decorating magazines and do-it-yourself books. Look at how others have made the most of their limited space. You’ll discover how, with a few simple techniques, even a small kitchen can have maximum appeal.
