Comparison shopping in college

Tips to save money.

August 6, 2007

As a college student, you probably have not reached your maximum income potential. Being able to afford all of the things you want and need is difficult, so saving money is extremely important. Comparison shopping is a great way to get the best deal on the things most college students feel are essential to their lives.

Electronics
Comparison shopping comes in handy with big purchases, like computers. Having your own computer in college is a great convenience. Unfortunately, computers and printers also cost a lot of money. If you decide to buy a computer, be sure to research which companies offer the lowest prices, as well as which computers are the most reliable and have the capabilities necessary to help you with school. It might also be a good idea to look into companies that sell refurbished or used computers. They are usually sold at a discount, and, if the company is reputable, the computer can last you through your college years.

Most electronics stores offer special deals around the beginning of the school year. Also, be sure to check out year-end sales and offers when new models come out.

Services
Comparison shopping also comes in handy is when you’re buying monthly services. Many college students feel that having a cell phone and internet access are necessities. Cell phones and e-mail make keeping in touch with friends, family and professors much easier. When you look at cell phone plans, comparison shopping for price, coverage, long distance and maybe even text message capabilities is a must. And when it comes to Internet access, you might want to look into wireless options or sharing a router with roommates so you can split the cost.

Cars
If you find you need a car while you are in college and you don’t have one from high school, you will need to do a great deal of comparison shopping. You will have to decide whether to buy a new or used car and whether you want to lease or buy. Then you can look for the best price around. When deciding between new or used, keep in mind that new cars depreciate as soon as they are driven off the lot. A new car does have attractive features, but buying a used car can offset that lost value because a considerable part of its depreciation has already taken place. If you decide on a new car, keep in mind that buying will let you drive the car any way you want, but leasing may have mileage restrictions. Also keep your financial situation in mind and whether it makes more sense to lease or buy given the amount you have for a down payment and the monthly amount you can afford.

Young or old. Married or single. No matter what phase of life you’re in, comparison shopping is a good idea. But it’s especially important to help you make the most of a limited budget when you are a college student.
