For most people, owning a car is a necessity. Finding ways to save on a car can be an asset to your financial planning. It only takes a little common sense and discipline to find savings when shopping for a car.

Check your own credit
Before you begin car shopping, check your credit report. Make sure that there is nothing that needs to be corrected. You credit score helps determine what the interest rate will be on your car loan. Your credit score should be at least 680 to avoid paying a higher interest rate. If you are paying a lower interest rate on your loan, this will help you save on a car.

Shop at the right time
Shopping at certain times can provide more chances for you to save on a car. For example, if you wait to shop until the end of the auto year right before the models change, you can usually buy that year’s model for great savings. Also, dealerships can offer you opportunities to save on a car if you shop at the end of the month or sometimes even the end of the week when they are trying to reach their sales quotas. The need to sell a certain number of cars can entice the dealer to offer you savings on a car.

Play it close to the vest
Once you have decided when to buy a car, don’t disclose everything to the salesperson at the dealership right away. For example, if you have a trade-in, you can save on a car if you wait to mention it until the last minute. Let the salesperson give you a price on the car you want, and then tell him/her that you have a trade-in. An even better option is to sell the car yourself. You can make more money that way and can put that money down on the new car.

Use the Internet
Another option to save on a car purchase is to shop through Internet sites. Many of them offer great savings on buying a car and great loan products, too. At the very least, Internet car sites allow you to do a lot of comparison shopping from the comfort of your own home.
