Do you have enough for retirement?

Information to help you make sure you have enough for retirement.

August 6, 2007

As a senior citizen, you may be very close to retirement or you may have already stopped working. It can be quite exciting to enjoy the fruits of your labor, but how do you know if you have enough money to last you throughout your retirement years? While no one can tell exactly how much you’ll need or exactly how long what you have will last you, there are a few things you can do to maximize your financial resources for your retirement.

Use your expertise
Retirement has changed and it no longer means passing your days in a rocking chair on the front porch of your house. Now more than ever, retirees are continuing to work, either as consultants in their field or at a part time job that feeds their interest. This can mean great things for your retirement finances because you won’t have to rely solely on Social Security and the money you socked away in a 401(k) plan. Consider doing some freelance work in your area of expertise or look into a part time job to help bolster your retirement savings.

Spend wisely
When you are living on a fixed income, it is especially important to be a smart spender. If you are lucky, you will have prepared your finances well enough to be able to afford to travel and make major purchases without loans. But if you haven’t, it is critical that you make the most of the money you have saved. That means making purchases that you can afford and having your major debt paid off before you stop working. Remember that when you are living on a fixed income, making loan payments can really deplete what you have saved, so be sure that you can manage making major purchases while still leaving enough to live comfortably.

Talk to a professional
Whether you are a senior citizen who has already retired, or if you are continuing to work for a few more years, if you are worried about whether your retirement savings will last you, it may be a prudent decision to talk to a professional in the financial planning field. He or she can give you some invaluable short term savings strategies and budgeting tips so that you can live the best retirement possible with the resources that you have. Ask a representative of your bank to recommend a financial planner so that you can have a professional assess your retirement finances and make the necessary adjustments to have a comfortable future.
