Outdoor rooms for students

Creating an outdoor room is easy with the following tips.

An outdoor room makes living in a small space much more bearable.  As a student, your residence is most likely a tiny space that you share with a few roommates.  In an apartment or even a dorm, you can create an outdoor room that improves the space where you live.

Getting started
First, analyze your space.  Do you have a balcony?  That is where you can create your outdoor room.  How do you plan to use the space?  You may consider making it an eating space or a spot for entertainment.  Apartment and dorm balconies tend to not be the most private places, so lean toward making your outdoor room a social place instead of a place for relaxation.

Elements of an outdoor room
A great outdoor room has the right combination of certain ingredients.  Here are some elements to consider.

  • Natural materials.  Natural materials work well in an outdoor room – after all, it is outdoors.  As a student, your budget for decorating is probably on the small side.  Instead of feeling like you need to invest in teak furniture, give your outdoor room a natural touch with plants.  Plants are affordable and add a nice touch to any outdoor room.
  • Comfort.  You want more than a grill on your balcony.  Try to make it comfortable by adding a place to sit.  To find appropriate seating for your outdoor room, be creative.  Search garage sales or second-hand shops for the furniture that is just right for your outdoor space.  The furniture does not have to be specifically outdoor furniture, either.  Just be sure that it can hold up decently to the elements.  Pick furniture that makes you want to spend time in your outdoor room.
  • Atmosphere.  This is key to creating the right outdoor space.  The furniture and accessories that you select should add to the sense of ambiance in your outdoor room.  Try adding Christmas lights to add to the intimacy and atmosphere of your outdoor room.
  • Water.  Another ingredient to creating the atmosphere of an outdoor room is water.  There is something about the sound of trickling water that is just perfect for an outdoor room.  Since your budget is limited as a student, look for a small, affordable tabletop fountain.  You can even find these at the drugstore or grocery store.  Set it on a little table or crate, and you'll have enhanced the atmosphere of your outdoor room.

Points to remember
As you plan your outdoor room, remember a few key points.  The main purpose of any outdoor room is to increase the useable space in a home.  Living in a small apartment or dorm room means that you are in need of expanding your space.  Design your outdoor room so that you want to spend time there and that it feels like a natural extension of your home.  Also, be sure to follow any rules of your apartment complex or dormitory.  You probably do not want to hang anything on the walls since you’ll have to pay for wall damage.  Also, make sure that you are allowed to have a grill.  If you are, you can buy a charcoal grill for under $10.

However you choose to use your outdoor room, keep it simple and don’t go overboard buying furnishings for it.  As a student, you will only be here for a limited time.  Create an outdoor room that meets your needs right now and is a fun place for you and your friends to hang out and relax.
