2019 Kia Sorento Review

Editorial Note: The content of this article is based on the author’s opinions and recommendations alone. It may not have been previewed, commissioned or otherwise endorsed by any of our network partners.

Though perhaps overshadowed by the newer and bigger Kia Telluride, the Kia Sorento is still an attractive midsize SUV with seven-passenger seating, a low starting price and a great basic warranty: five years, 60,000 miles. It’s the lowest-priced model on our roundup of the best three-row SUVs but big brother Telluride is going to beat it in horsepower and roominess, with space for eight passengerskia sorento

2019 Kia Sorento pricing

Kia’s manufacturer’s recommended price (MSRP) for the Sorento starts at $26,290. This price can increase by nearly $20,000, however, for the decked-out top trim, the Sorento SX Limited.

Trim L LX LX V6 EX V6 SX SX Limited
Base MSRP $26,290 $27,650 $31,290 $35,590 $39,990 $44,690

But you don’t necessarily have to pay MSRP. Depending on where and when you want to buy a Sorento, you could pay less. Shop around to check prices and check out an industry guide — NADAguides or Kelley Blue Book, for example — to find a fair market price for your area.

What’s next? Most people need a car loan once they find a car. But beware, car dealers not only habitually raise car prices, they also raise customer loan APRs. Therefore, it’s important to apply for a car loan outside of a dealership. Potential lenders may include Kia financing, your bank, credit union or online lender. You could also fill out an online form at LendingTree to receive up to five potential auto loan offers from lenders, based on your creditworthiness. It doesn’t hurt your credit to apply to multiple lenders any more than it does to apply to one if you do all your applications within 14 days — and some credit scoring methods may even allow you up to 45 days.

2019 Kia Sorento safety

The 2019 Sorento earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for both its front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. It was also named a 2019 Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Kia also offers some advanced driver safety features, but only if you step up from the base L trim level.

Included in the LX trim:

  • Blind Spot Collision Warning. With the turn signal on, the car can alert the driver of another vehicle in the driver’s blind spot.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Collision Warning. When in reverse, the car can alert the driver of oncoming passing traffic.

Included in the EX V6 trim are the above safety features and:

  • Parking Distance Warning-Reverse.  At low speeds, the car can alert you that it is getting too close to an object behind it.
  • Forward Collision Warning and Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection. Warns the driver of a potential collision and applies the brakes if the driver does not.
  • Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist. The car can warn the driver of unintentional lane departure and make small adjustments to help the car stay in the lane.
  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop and Go. With cruise control on, the car can adjust its speed to match and follow a car in front of it. The car can also automatically come to a complete stop and start again, up to the preset speed, if the stop time is less than three seconds.
  • Driver Attention Warning. The car can give visual and audible driver alerts if it senses a low attention level.
  • Auto Dimming Rearview Mirror. The internal rear view mirror can detect bright light and automatically dim according to prevent glare.

Included in the SX trim are the above safety features and:

  • Parking Distance Warning-Forward.  At low speeds, the car can alert you that it is getting too close to an object in front of it.

Included in the SX-Limited trim are the above safety features and:

  • Surround View Monitor. The Surround View Monitor offers a birds-eye view of the Sorento.
  • Low-Beam and High-Beam Assist. The car switches between low beams and high beams depending on the conditions and when it detects oncoming traffic.

2019 Kia Sorento trim comparison

The Sorento has six trims. Each trim builds upon the trim(s) that came before it. For example, the LX V6 has or improves upon all features that the LX and the L have. Note you could add all-wheel drive to any trim LX and above, but it is not standard on any trim. All trims have a third row.

2019 Kia Sorento competitor comparison

The Sorento beats competitors on price, but many rivals offer more in terms of standard safety features. Here’s a look at some of the competition. It’s worth noting that a couple of these do not have a third row.

Fuel economy is combined city/highway mileage as defined by the EPA.

The bottom line on the 2019 Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento can be a great choice as a family hauler. A base MSRP under $27,000 for a midsize SUV is practically a steal. However, in the midsize class, the Sorento is relatively small. The third row fits two passengers, not three, and may not be suitable for adults for long trips. It also falls a bit short in resale value and expert ratings compared with the Honda Pilot.

You might like the Kia Sorento if you need to occasionally haul up to seven people and appreciate the low MSRP. You might not like it if you need a larger amount of space or plan to resell the vehicle in a few short years.
