If you haven't heard, city living is back in style. This trend could be due to worsening traffic, fluctuating gas prices, or just better networks of bicycle paths and public transit. As an increasing number of Americans are now choosing to live in major cities, they will need to choose the appropriate credit cards for city life.

City living is a lifestyle choice that can require living in smaller spaces, eating out more, and relying on different modes of transportation than those who live in suburban or rural areas. In addition, urbanites also need to choose the right credit card can that will help them earn the most valuable rewards for the kind of spending they do. For example, a city dweller will not be able to earn too many bonus points if the featured categories are places like gas stations, supermarkets, and department stores that they rarely visit.

Here are four credit cards that offer rewards that are best suited for city life:

Citi ThankYou® Preferred. This card offers double points for spending on all dining and entertainment purchases, which includes many of the places where urbanites spend money. For example, Citi's dining category includes include bars, cocktail lounges, nightclubs, taverns, and fast food restaurants. In fact, even restaurants that only offer takeout and delivery are covered. And when it comes to entertainment, this card offers double points for concerts, theater tickets, movies, and museums. Points are worth about one cent each towards a variety of rewards including merchandise, gift cards, and travel reservations, and there is no annual fee for this card.

Amazon Prime credit card from Synchrony Bank. While Amazon is a popular online retailer for customers across the country, urbanites have a special affection for it as it allows them to avoid the hassle of carrying packages across the city on foot or on public transit. Thankfully, there is now a way for members of Amazon Prime's subscription service to save 5% on all of their purchases, by using the Amazon Prime store credit card. There is no annual fee for this card for members of Amazon Prime, which itself costs $99 a year and includes free two day shipping and access to their streaming video and music services. However, this is a store credit card and it's not part of any payment network, so it can only be used for purchases from Amazon.com.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. This card offers double points on all dining and travel purchases and Chase uses a broad definition of travel that includes not just airlines and hotels, but car rental agencies (like the Car2Go urban car rental service) passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, and ferries.
