Owning a pet isn’t cheap. An estimated 90.5 million U.S. households own at least one pet, according to a 2020-2021 survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association. And Americans are continuing to spend more money on their pets each year, with $103.6 billion spent in 2020 and an estimated $109.6 billion in 2021.

While devoted pet owners would say the price of taking care of a pet is well worth it, know that using a credit card that offers cash back on every purchase, including pet food and vet appointments, can help offset these costs. Or, if you need to finance pet expenses, a credit card with a fixed interest rate or 0% intro APR can help you save on interest charges.

Based on our research of cards available through LendingTree, as well as top cards offered by major issuers, we’ve put together a list of the best pet credit cards for the following categories:

Methodology

To select the best card for each of these categories, our credit card experts compared a broad range of credit card offers, including rewards credit cards, 0% intro APR credit cards, balance transfer credit cards and more, on LendingTree.com and major issuer sites.

We chose our top picks based on a variety of factors, including rewards programs, annual fees and interest rates. Other factors that came into play when making our selection include the benefits offered by the card, such as cellphone insurance and extended warranty protection, and the ability to access your line of credit instantly.

Which pet credit card is right for you?

Ultimately, the right pet credit card for you depends on your needs. For example, if you’re in an emergency situation and need fast access to credit, the CareCredit® credit card could be a good fit. But because the card’s terms can be a bit tricky due to deferred interest clauses, a credit card that offers a 0% intro APR on purchases may be a better choice.

Or, if you have a large amount of existing credit card debt from previous pet expenses, a balance transfer card that offers a 0% introductory APR for more than a year can help you save money on hefty interest charges while paying down the debt. On the other hand, if you want to help offset the cost of your pet purchases, a card that offers caBest credit card for pet expenses FAQsshback rewards on every purchase may be ideal.

Best credit card for pet expenses FAQs

Select issuers, such as American Express, provide instant credit card numbers to eligible cardmembers immediately upon approval. This allows you to shop online and take advantage of card benefits right away, instead of waiting for a physical card to arrive in the mail.

A balance transfer is a transaction that involves moving debt from one or more credit cards to another credit card. Since balance transfer credit cards offer introductory APRs that typically are much lower than standard interest rates, they provide a means to pay down your credit card debt more quickly, since they allow more of your payments to go toward the debt principal rather than the principal plus interest. Just know that you can’t transfer a balance between cards from the same issuing bank.

Deferred interest, which typically is a promotion tied to store credit cards, allows cardholders to carry a balance from month to month without paying interest for a specified period of time. If you don’t pay the credit card balance in full by the end of the promotional period, not only will you be assessed interest charges on the remaining balance, but you will be responsible for all the interest that accrued during the promotional period.
