Roadside assistance — also sometimes referred to as roadside dispatch — is a benefit offered by some credit cards to provide help in the event you experience a flat tire, dead battery or other unexpected auto issues.

Depending on the card, eligible services may include towing, jumpstarts, fuel delivery, tire changes and lockout service. While some cards provide complimentary coverage up to a specific amount each incident, others charge a pre-negotiated rate per service call (cardholders will be responsible for any additional fees incurred beyond those amounts).

Based on the cards available on LendingTree.com and on major issuer sites, here are our picks for the best credit cards for roadside assistance for the following categories:

Methodology

To select the best credit cards for roadside assistance, our experts compared the leading credit cards that provide a roadside assistance benefit on LendingTree.com and on major issuer sites.

We then chose our best picks among top card issuers based on the coverage included with the roadside assistance benefit and the price for emergency services. We also took into account each card’s rewards program, annual fee and interest rate, as well as any other benefits offered by the card, such as cellphone protection and trip cancellation insurance.

Best credit cards for roadside assistance FAQs

The following issuers offer roadside assistance:

  • American Express discontinued the benefit in January 2020.
  • Bank of America provides roadside assistance for all of its Visa-branded cards.
  • Capital One does not directly offer roadside assistance, but the benefit is available for some cardholders through their benefits with Visa and Mastercard.
  • Chase offers roadside dispatch for its Visa and Mastercard credit cards. However, select cards provide additional roadside assistance coverage.
  • Citi stopped providing roadside assistance in September 2019 (although it is still available for select cards through Visa or Mastercard).
  • Wells Fargo offers roadside assistance for all of its consumer credit card products.

While there may be some variations depending on the issuer, generally, the following vehicles are covered by roadside assistance: Self-propelled, four wheel vehicles designed and used for private on-road transportation; trucks limited to a carrying capacity of up to 2,000 points.

Commercial vehicles are typically not covered.

Roadside assistance and towing may not be available in areas not regularly traveled, or in “off road” areas not accessible by ordinary towing vehicles.

The service is also typically available for use in the U.S. and Canada.
