Taking a family vacation can be a large financial investment. Because of the steep costs involved, travel insurance is a tempting idea when making travel arrangements. What some people might not realize is that the only travel insurance they need could be a piece of plastic in their wallet.

Credit cards offer consumers many valuable perks, and one of them happens to be travel insurance. By having one of the many credit cards offering protection, you could be reimbursed in the event that your trip is delayed or canceled. It also helps to protect you if your luggage is lost or its arrival is delayed.

Types of Travel Insurance Offered

Trip Cancellation/Interruption Coverage

If your vacation is either canceled or interrupted because of weather, illness or any other covered expense, then you could be reimbursed for any non-refundable expenses. This could be a prepaid hotel room, tours, car rentals, and more. The amount is based on the card that you used for payment.

Trip Delay Reimbursement

If your trip is delayed or you are forced to stay overnight because of the delay, you can be reimbursed for expenses that you incur during the delay. These can include hotel stays and food.

Luggage Delay Insurance

If you arrive at your destination and your luggage does not, then you can be reimbursed to cover the cost of clothing and basic toiletries.

Lost Luggage Reimbursement

If your luggage is lost or damaged by the airlines, then you and your travel companions can be reimbursed for your loss. The card that you used will determine the compensated amount.

Five Credit Cards Offering Travel Protection

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance – Up to $10,000 per person for non-refundable expenses.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – Up to $500 per ticket if you are delayed more than 12 hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Delayed Baggage Reimbursement – Up to $100 per day for up to five days if your luggage is delayed more than six hours.
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 for you and any immediate family member traveling that has their bag lost or damaged by the airlines during travel.

Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite™ Mastercard®

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance – Up to $5,000 per person, per trip for non-refundable expenses. This could also include change fees with the airline.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – Up to $500 per person if you are delayed more than three hours. This could cover hotels, meals, toiletries, ect.
  • Delayed Baggage Reimbursement – Up to $500 when your bags are delayed three hours or more. This is only good for outbound flights and not good when returning home.
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 per person, per trip when your luggage is lost or damaged by the carrier. The amount is decreased to $2,000 if you area resident of New York state.

Citi Prestige® Card

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance – Up to $5,000 per person, per trip for non-refundable purchases made with the Citi Prestige card.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – Up to $500 per trip when your travel is delayed at least three hours.
  • Delayed Baggage Reimbursement – Up to $500 to cover personal expenses like toiletries and clothes if your luggage is more than three hours late to your destination.
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 per person or $10,000 for all travel companions if your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen by the airline. If you are a resident of New York state then the amount is $2,000.

United MileagePlus® Explorer Card

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance – Up to $10,000 per trip for any non-refundable travel expense made.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – Up to $500 for each ticket purchased with the United MileagePlus Explorer card. Delay must be at least 12 hours or require an overnight stay to qualify.
  • Delayed Baggage Reimbursement – Up to $100 per day for three days if your bags are delayed at least six hours.
  • LostLuggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 per passenger to cover any bag that is lost, stolen or damaged.

Chase Hyatt Card

  • Trip Cancellation or Interruption Insurance – Up to $5,000 per trip for any non-refundable expense paid for with a Chase Hyatt card.
  • Trip Delay Reimbursement – Up to $500 per ticket when a flight is delayed more than 12 hours.
  • Delayed Baggage Reimbursement – Up to $100 per day, for up to five days when luggage is delayed more than six hours.
  • Lost Luggage Reimbursement – Up to $3,000 per passenger when luggage is lost, stolen, or damaged.
