If you’re in the market for a credit card that offers airline rewards and benefits, but don’t want to commit to paying a hefty annual fee each year, you may want to consider the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card — issued by our partner Citi. In addition to offering a solid sign-up bonus and an accelerated rewards rate on American Airline purchases and groceries, the card charges a $0 annual fee.

But if you’d prefer a card with more rewards categories and travel benefits — and you don’t mind paying an annual fee after the first year of card membership — the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® may be a better fit.

Earn 2 AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases. Earn 1 AAdvantage® mile for every $1 spent on other purchases.

    Spending at grocery stores covers supermarkets, freezer/meat locker provisioners, dairy product stores, miscellaneous food/convenience stores, markets, specialty vendors and bakeries, and food delivery services. Spending on American Airlines includes travel booked at aa.com, American Airlines reservations and American Airlines airport and city ticket counters.

What to watch out for

  • No intro APR

    The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card does not offer an intro APR on purchases or balance transfers. So if you’re interested in financing a trip or transferring a balance from a high interest credit card, you may be better off with a card that offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and/or balance transfers for an extended period of time.

  • Limited travel benefits

    This card doesn’t come with some of the travel-related benefits offered by other airline rewards card, such as airport lounge access, free checked bags and priority check-in and boarding.

If you want an American Airlines card that’s more robust than the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card, a good one to consider is the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®. It has more perks and benefits than the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card, but it also comes with an annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months. However, after making just two round-trip flights and checking a free bag, the money you save on checked baggage costs covers the card’s annual fee.

The Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® has a better new cardmember sign-up bonus: Earn 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles after $2,500 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.

Cardmembers earn 2 AAdvantage® miles for every $1 spent at gas stations, restaurants, and on eligible American Airlines purchases. It covers both the dining and gas categories, which is better than the American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card. You and up to four companions traveling on the same reservation get a free checked bag on U.S.-based American Airlines flights. But you don’t get airport lounge access or priority check-in, boarding and baggage handling.

You also receive a $125 American Airlines flight discount after spending at least $20,000 during your card year and you renew your card.

Is this card right for you?

The American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp℠ Card is a good option for American Airlines loyalists who fly from time to time and want to earn rewards to use toward future travel. Although the card doesn’t offer many valuable travel benefits, it does allow cardholders to earn an elevated rewards rate on American Airlines purchases and groceries — at a $0 annual fee.

But if you fly on a more regular basis, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® may bet a better fit, since it offers a more valuable sign-up bonus and more extensive travel benefits. Just know, the card charges an annual fee after the first year of card membership.
