Who is the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card best for?

The Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card is aimed at consumers with fair credit who don’t want to pay a security deposit for a secured credit card and who want to earn cash back. However, while the card comes with a solid cashback program and requires no deposit, cardholders are burdened with numerous fees and a high APR. For these reasons, we’ll also suggest a different card for fair credit that might be a better fit.

What we like about the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card

  • Accessible if you have fair credit

Many cashback credit cards require good to excellent credit. The Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card is available if you only have fair credit (credit scores that fall in the 580-669 range), making it a more accessible option.

  • Offers a cashback program

The Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card lets cardholders earn up to 3% cash back reward on purchases. However, note that this rate only applies to gas, groceries and utility payments.

  • No security deposit required

Many credit cards available to those with poor or fair credit are secured cards, meaning you must submit a security deposit to the issuer in the amount of your desired credit limit. There’s typically a minimum deposit required, often $200 or $300. Consumers who don’t want to tie up $200 or $300 in a deposit might prefer an unsecured card such as the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card.

However, it’s worth noting that unsecured cards for people with less-than-great credit often charge annual fees and sometimes other fees in addition, so a good secured card such as the Discover it® Secured Credit Card that charges a $0 annual fee can end up being more affordable in the long run.

What to watch out for with the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card

  • Annual fee and authorized user fee

Your first year with the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card, you’ll be charged an annual fee — the specific amount varies and is determined by the issuer.

After the first year, your account might have an annual fee or it might not. Again, the amount can vary. For specifics, as low as $85 in your cardholder agreement.

In addition, you might have to pay an authorized user fee. If applicable to your account, that fee is $25 for an additional card. But that’s not all; read on for details of the account maintenance fee.

  • Account maintenance fee

After your first year with the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card, you’ll be charged a monthly account maintenance fee. This can range from $5 to $12.50 per month ($60 to $159 annually).

  • High interest rate

It’s normal for cards aimed at applicants with less-than-stellar credit to have high interest rates. But the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card‘s 29.99% or 36% (v) APR is on the high end. If you get this card, make sure to pay off your account in full every billing cycle to avoid getting hit with some very expensive interest charges.

  • Foreign transaction fee

If traveling abroad, you’ll want to leave the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card at home, because it charges a foreign transaction fee of 3% of each transaction amount in U.S. dollars.

  • Restrictive cashback redemption

With many cashback credit cards, you earn cash back after each monthly billing cycle, and you can redeem it as soon as you like after it’s earned. With the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card, your cash back will be automatically redeemed once a year as a statement credit to your account.

Is the Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card right for you?

The Aspire® Cash Back Reward Card is accessible with fair credit and offers a decent cashback rate on gas, groceries and utility payments. But between the potential annual fee, the monthly account maintenance fee and the high APR, it’s hard to recommend this card.

Instead, you may want to consider the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card if you want an unsecured card, or perhaps the Discover it® Secured Credit Card if you can put together $200 for the minimum deposit.
