Who is the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card best for?

The Avianca Vuela Visa® Card is an airline card associated with Avianca, the second largest airline in Latin America. While Avianca filed for bankruptcy protection in May 2020 due to the financial impact of the pandemic, it continues to operate and is currently restructuring to become a stronger airline.

The airline proceeded to temporarily cancel more than 20 international destinations as of March 2021, but is also adding a slew of beach destination routes, such as Punta Cana, Cancun and Cartagena. As the airline evolves its route network, it’s best to check where it’s currently flying to ensure that it covers any destination you may be particularly interested in before applying for the card.

Geared toward loyal Avianca frequent flyers, the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card offers a generous rewards rate for spending with the airline, plus Avianca miles can be redeemed through a vast array of airlines that belong to the Star Alliance network. International travelers who fly between Central America or Colombia and the U.S. will benefit the most from this card, but know that LifeMiles can also unlock a lot of value for booking inexpensive Star Alliance partner award flights.

Like many airline rewards cards, there is an annual fee, but cardholders don’t get a lot of benefits in return for it.

If you’re not sure the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card is worth the $149 annual fee, then you may want to consider the Avianca Vida Visa® Card, which comes with a $59 annual fee. However, in exchange you get even fewer benefits and a lower sign-up bonus.

If you’re nervous about the future of the Avianca LifeMiles loyalty program due to its restructuring, you may also want to consider the United℠ Explorer Card, where the miles you earn can also be redeemed through Star Alliance airline partners, including Avianca.

Is the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card right for you?

The value of the current sign-up bonus on the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card is worth around $650 when redeemed for Avianca flights (based on a value of less than 2 cents a mile). If you subtract the $149 annual fee, that reduces the value of the sign-up bonus to around $500. However, points and miles enthusiasts report finding some great deals on Star Alliance partners using Avianca LifeMiles, including on United Airlines.

However, if you’re new to airline cards, you may want to start with the less expensive Avianca Vida Visa® Card, but the value of your sign-up bonus minus the annual fee is about half of that of the Avianca Vuela Visa® Card.

If you’re under the Chase 5/24 rule (which is where Chase limits card acceptance if you’ve applied for more than five cards in a two-year period), then you may want to take a serious look at the United℠ Explorer Card instead, with its higher sign-up bonus and wealth of benefits not found on either of the Avianca cards.
