Who is the Mastercard® Titanium Card™ best for?

The Mastercard® Titanium Card™ is the lowest tier of the three Luxury Cards issued by Barclays, with the others in the collection being the Mastercard® Black Card™ and the Mastercard® Gold Card™.

Each Luxury Card charges an expensive annual fee and tacks on an extra fee for each authorized user you add. However, they are suited to consumers looking for a credit card with cachet and don’t mind paying a premium price for it.

Each card features the Luxury Card Concierge, which can help you out with travel bookings, personal requests and more. Plus, the Mastercard® Titanium Card™ card has serious plunk appeal as it’s made from stainless steel and weighs in at 22 grams.

Cardmembers also have access to the Luxury Card Travel Program, offering complimentary benefits valued at around $500 at more than 3,000 properties around the world (such as room upgrades, complimentary food and beverages, spa credits and other amenities), as well as a free subscription to Luxury Magazine.

However, the Mastercard® Titanium Card™ earns points at a lackluster rate and doesn’t offer a sign-up bonus, so travelers who want to maximize points for free flights or hotel stays might want to consider a different travel rewards card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

What we like about the Mastercard® Titanium Card™

  • Elevated rewards redemption rate

The Mastercard® Titanium Card™ earns flat-rate rewards, but gives you double the value when redeeming rewards for airfare: 2% value for airfare redemptions with no blackout dates or seat restrictions. 1% value for cash back redemptions. Earn one point for every one dollar spent.

    Redemption options include:

    • Airfare
    • Hotels
    • Car rentals
    • Direct deposit to a bank account
    • Statement credits
    • Gift cards/certificates
    • Merchandise
    • Experiences

When redeeming your rewards, redemptions for airfare start at 50 points for $1, and redemptions into a bank account or as a statement credit start at 100 points for $1.

  • Concierge service

The Luxury Card Concierge, available 24/7 to help cardholders with a variety of requests, is probably the best feature of the Mastercard® Titanium Card™. Barclays describes this service as a “complete lifestyle management tool.” Examples of how cardholders have used the concierge include:

    • Researching the best school districts before moving to Denver.
    • Figuring out how to propose on the JumboTron in New York City’s Times Square.
    • Arranging a meet and greet with a Boston Bruins player after a game.
    • Arranging to have cash and jewelry that had been left behind retrieved from the hotel and sent home.

Ways to communicate with concierge agents include live chat, phone and email.

  • No foreign transaction fee

You can take this card when traveling abroad and have peace of mind because the foreign transaction fee is 0% of each transaction in U.S. dollars.

  • Travel benefits

    This card’s benefits include:

    • Baggage delay insurance of up to $100 a day for a maximum of three days. Applies when baggage is delayed more than four hours after your arrival at your destination (primary residence excluded).
    • Trip cancellation and interruption coverage (secondary) for up to $5,000 per insured person if certain accidental covered events cause you to have to cancel or interrupt your trip.
    • Auto rental collision waiver that provides secondary coverage when you pay for the entire rental transaction on this card and decline the coverage offered by the rental agency.
    • Travel accident insurance for up to $250,000 in cases of accidental death and dismemberment when traveling on a common carrier and you’ve charged your entire travel fare to this card.
  • Intro APR period

Enjoy a 0% introductory APR for the first fifteen billing cycles following each balance transfer that posts to your account within 45 days of account opening.

This is a decent amount of time to pay off debt you’ve transferred from another card. However, we don’t recommend making new purchases while paying off a transferred balance, but rather focusing on zeroing out your debt. Also, be aware there’s a balance transfer fee — either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

What to look out for with the Mastercard® Titanium Card™

  • Subpar rewards rate

Earning just one point per $1 spent is a subpar rewards rate, especially with this being billed as a luxury card. It’s easy to find competing travel cards with better rewards programs.

For example, with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (which has a $95 annual fee): earn 5x on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3x on dining and 2x on all other travel purchases. And with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (which has a $95 annual fee): 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, every day; 5 miles on hotels and rental cars booked through capital one travel; 5 miles per dollar when you book on turo, the world’s largest car sharing marketplace, through may 16, 2023.

  • Can't transfer points

A lot of travel cards allow cardholders to transfer points to airline and hotel travel partners. This way, if you’re a member of a loyalty program, you have the option of transferring points and redeeming them for reward travel or a free hotel stay. This card doesn’t allow that. Instead, you can only book travel through InComm InCentives (via myluxurycard.com or by calling the customer service number on the back of your card).

  • No sign-up bonus

Many competing travel credit cards offer generous sign-up bonuses in exchange for a annual fee. But, the Mastercard® Titanium Card™ offers no sign-up bonus at all.

  • High annual fee

The Mastercard® Titanium Card™ has an annual fee of $195 ($95 for each authorized user added to the account). This is a high annual fee given the card’s low rewards rate and lack of sign-up bonus.

If you’re looking for a travel card with a lower annual fee and a better rewards rate than the Mastercard® Titanium Card™, consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. It comes with a lower annual fee of $95 and cardholders earn 5x on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards®, 3x on dining and 2x on all other travel purchases. Plus, points can transfer to 11 airline and three hotel loyalty programs.

You can also redeem points for travel via the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, which gets you 25% more value. For example, 80,000 points would be worth $1,000 in travel when redeemed that way. Additional redemption options include statement credits, deposits to a U.S. bank account, gift cards and more.

And because the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a Visa Signature credit card, cardholders have access to the Visa Signature Concierge Service, which is available 24 hours a day. Get help with such activities as finding tickets to sporting and entertainment events, making dinner reservations, and sending gifts. (Note that any goods or services purchased while using the concierge will be billed to your credit card.)

And just in case you’re curious, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is also a metal card, although not as heavy as the Mastercard® Titanium Card™.

If you want the 24/7 “lifestyle management service” that comes with the Luxury Card Concierge, and don’t mind paying the annual fee of $195 ($95 for each authorized user added to the account), the Mastercard® Titanium Card™ could be right for you. While its rewards rate is lackluster, at least it offers double the value when you redeem points for airfare.
