Who is the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card best for?

Delta Air Lines takes travelers to up to 300 destinations in more than 50 countries. If you’re a small business owner who frequently relies on Delta to get you where you need to go around the country or around the globe, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card might be right for you.

This card charges a reasonable annual fee, offers valuable travel benefits, and lets you earn miles on every purchase. However, some business owners might prefer a travel card that allows more flexibility in how rewards are used and isn’t tied to a specific airline, such as the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.

There are also two other Delta business credit cards: the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card and the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card. While these cards charge higher annual fees than the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card, they also provide something that card does not — a way to get closer to Medallion Status.

What we like about the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card

  • Solid welcome offer

New cardholders can earn 50,000 bonus miles and a $50 statement credit after spending $2,000 in purchases on your new card in your first 3 months. By spending about $666.67 a month on the card, you can hit that spending requirement.

  • Earn miles on every swipe

Enjoy miles on every purchase and a boosted rate on certain categories: Earn 2 Miles on every dollar spent on eligible purchases made directly with Delta, on every dollar spent on eligible U.S. purchases for advertising in select media, on every dollar spent on eligible U.S. shipping purchases, on every eligible dollar spent on dining at restaurants. Earn 1 Mile on every eligible dollar spent on purchases.

Between Delta and its network of partner airlines, your miles can get you to more than 1,000 destinations around the world.

  • Save up to $60 on your checked luggage

Check your first bag for free when traveling Delta, which is estimated at a savings of up to $60 on round-trip flights. That means the savings on checked luggage could outweigh the amount of the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card‘s annual fee in as little as two flights.

  • $100 Delta Flight Voucher

After $10,000 or more in eligible purchases on this card in a calendar year, you’ll earn a $100 Delta eCredit that can be used toward a Delta flight purchase.

  • Annual fee waived your first year

There’s a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99. Some cards don’t waive the annual fee during your first year, instead charging it right out of the gate, so this is a nice feature of the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card.

  • No foreign transaction fee

If business takes you abroad, you can use the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card without worrying about a foreign transaction fee on each purchase, because there is none.

What to watch out for with the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card

  • No transfers to travel partners

If you like the flexibility of being able to transfer your credit card rewards to different airline and hotel loyalty programs, this isn’t the travel card for you.

  • You'll pay an annual fee

The Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card charges a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99. If you travel infrequently, it might not be worth it for you after the first year.

  • Won't help you reach Medallion Status

Delta Medallion Status comes in four tiers (silver, gold, platinum and diamond) and comes with a variety of benefits, such as upgrades, fee waivers and expedited baggage service. You can work your way up through the tiers through a combination of Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs), Medallion Qualification Segments (MQSs) and Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs). Some of the co-branded cards offered by Delta and American Express have features that help you toward Medallion Status — but the Delta SkyMiles® Gold Business American Express Card does not.

  • No airport lounge access

If you’re looking for Delta Sky Club® access so you can handle business on the go in comfort, you’ll need to consider the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card or the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card rather than this card.

If you’re not a Delta frequent flyer or just want more options when using rewards earned on your card, you may want to consider another option for your business needs, like the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card. It charges a reasonable annual fee of $95 and earns valuable Chase Ultimate Rewards® points.

There’s a generous sign-up bonus too: Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $15,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

What makes this card a standout option for travelers who don’t want to be tied to one airline or hotel chain is the flexibility of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points. You can redeem them for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal, which nets cardholders with the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card 25% more value — for example, 100,000 points are worth $1,250 in travel when redeemed that way.
