Who is the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card best for?

Business travelers who are loyal to Hilton hotels can find value in the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card, which charges a $95 annual fee. It earns rewards for purchase categories such as gas stations, flights and restaurants and offers helpful benefits including complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status and the ability to earn free weekend nights.

Hilton has 18 brands that fit into any company’s travel budget, such as the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, the upscale Embassy Suites by Hilton and the midscale Hampton Inn. It covers more than 6,500 properties in 119 countries. However, businesses that don’t want to be tied to one hotel chain might prefer a card such as the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card, issued by Chase.

We break down what the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card offers and how the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card compares.

What we like about the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

  • Welcome offer

Earn 130,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 in purchases on the Card in the first 3 months of Card Membership. Plus, Earn Up to $100 in Statement Credits on eligible purchases made on the Card at any of the Hilton family of hotels in the first 12 months of Card Membership. Offer ends 8/25/2021.

  • Generous rewards program

For ongoing rewards, this card offers 12X at hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio, 6X on Select Business & Travel Purchases, 3X Everywhere Else. Terms & Limitations Apply.

Purchases that may be eligible for 6X points include:

    • Gas stations in the United States
    • Wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers
    • U.S. purchases for shipping
    • Flights booked directly with airlines or with Amex Travel
    • Car rentals booked directly from select car rental companies

Redemption options include hotel stays, Hilton experiences, Lyft rides, shopping and rental cars.

  • Transfer points to travel partners

You can exchange points and miles with more than 30 participating airline, rail and mileage rewards programs worldwide. You can also exchange points between your Hilton Honors account and an American Express or Diners Club card.

  • Hilton Honors Gold and Diamond status

Hilton Honors Gold status is complimentary with your card, and offers benefits such as:

    • 80% bonus points on stays
    • Space-available room upgrades
    • Free continental breakfast

You can earn Diamond status by spending $40,000 in a calendar year on your card. Diamond status offers a wider range of benefits, including:

    • 100% bonus points on stays
    • Executive lounge access
    • Premium Wi-Fi
    • 48-hour room guarantee

  • Earn free hotel nights

Cardholders can earn a weekend night from Hilton Honors after spending $15,000 on the card in a calendar year. And there’s a second weekend night available after spending $60,000 during the year (an additional $45,000 on top of the original $15,000 spent).

  • Free airport lounge visits

Enjoy 10 free visits each year to Priority Pass™ airport lounges (enrollment required). For the semi-frequent traveler who doesn’t need the extensive lounge access offered by a more expensive card such as the Business Platinum Card® from American Express ($595 annual fee) this is an excellent value.

  • No foreign transaction fee

If business takes you abroad, you can swipe the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card without worrying about an extra fee on every purchase – there is none.

What to watch out for with the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card

  • Annual fee

It costs $95 a year to carry the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card. That’s reasonable for the value you can get from this card, but some business owners might prefer a no-annual-fee card.

  • You must spend to earn free nights

They’re called “free weekend nights,” but to earn them, you have to hit a certain spending amount each calendar year. You’ll earn the first free night after spending $15,000 and the second free night after spending an additional $45,000 (for a total of $60,000).

The rooms are standard and can only be booked for Friday, Saturday and Sunday stays.

  • Not all transfers are 1:1

Points may not transfer at 1:1 value. For example, if you want to exchange your Hilton Honors points for Delta miles, 10,000 points will equal 1,000 miles.

  • Diamond status requires spending

Cardholders get Hilton Honors Gold status just by having the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card. But to upgrade to Hilton Honors Diamond status, you’ll have to spend $40,000 on your card in a calendar year.

Is the Hilton Honors American Express Business Card right for you?

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card offers generous rewards and helpful benefits for small businesses. If you and your employees frequent Hilton hotels when on the road, you may well get enough value from this card to make it worth the $95 annual fee.

But if you don’t want to be tied to Hilton-branded hotels, and you want to be sure if you transfer points that you’re getting a 1:1 value, the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card is a better choice. The annual fee is also $95, and you have much more flexibility in how you use your rewards.
