Who is the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card best for?

If you frequently stay at InterContinental Hotel Group (IHG) properties, the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card should be on your radar.

With more than 5,000 IHG Hotels and Resorts from which to choose — including InterContinental Alliance Resorts, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites, Candlewood Suites and more — this card offers a generous rewards rate for stays at these properties.

Points can be redeemed for hotel stays, merchandise, IHG Rewards Club access, cash, magazine subscriptions, gift cards, digital entertainment and charities. You can also transfer points to a number of airline transfer partners, including British Airways, Delta SkyMiles, JetBlue TrueBlue and United Airlines.

The IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card also offers a slew of great travel benefits. But while the card charges a $99 annual fee and each point is only worth approximately 0.5 cents, know that you can still get a lot of value from the card’s sign-up bonus.

What we like about the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card

  • Sign-up bonus

Earn 140,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.

  • Rewards earning rate for IHG stays

Earn up to 26 points total per $1 spent when you stay at an IHG hotel. Earn 5 points per $1 spent on purchases on travel, gas stations, and restaurants. Earn 3 points per $1 spent on all other purchases.

  • Annual bonus

Get 10,000 bonus points after you spend $20,000 and make one additional purchase with the card each account anniversary.

  • Extensive benefits

In addition to a wide array of travel protections, IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card cardmembers can get up to a $100 statement credit when using the card to pay for Global Entry or TSAPrecheck applications.

  • Platinum Elite status

IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card cardmembers are automatically upgraded to IHG Rewards Club Platinum Elite Status, which allows a 50% point bonus on stays, late checkout, priority check-in, complimentary room upgrade when available and a welcome amenity.

  • Free night awards

In addition to the sign-up bonus, the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card offers a free reward night after each account anniversary year. Plus, earn a free reward night when you redeem points for a four-night consecutive IHG hotel stay.

What to watch out for with the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card

  • Poor rewards transfer rate

The IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card offers a variety of travel transfer partners; however, your points will transfer at a rate of 5:1 or worse. For example, if you transfer 10,000 IHG points to American Airlines, Delta SkyMiles or United Airlines, they will only be worth 2,000 miles.

  • High spend required for annual bonus

To earn the 10,000-point annual bonus, you will be required to spend $20,000 and make one additional purchase with the card each account anniversary year — for an average of $1,667 in charges per month for a year.

  • Anniversary reward night limitation

The free anniversary award night value is capped at 40,000 points, which isn’t horrible, but does limit you from redeeming that award at higher-end properties.

  • Low earnings rate on everyday spending

While you can earn a good rewards rate on IHG hotel stays, the ability to rack up a wealth of points outside of those stays isn’t great.

Alternate hotel card to the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card

Compare it to the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card

If you open to staying at Marriott Bonvoy properties over IHG Hotels and Resorts, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card is a great alternative. Along with offering free night stays, the card lets you earn a generous rewards rate.

For the sign-up bonus: Earn 3 Free Night Awards (each night valued up to 50,000 points) after spending $3,000 on purchases in your first 3 months from account opening with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card!

And for ongoing rewards: Earn up to 17X total points for every $1 spent at over 7,000 hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy® and 2X points on all other purchases.

With the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, hotel redemptions start at 5,000 points for an off-peak night at a category 1 hotel and 7,500 points for a standard night. This means that 75,000 points can get you 15 off-peak nights or 10 standard nights at a category 1 hotel, like the SpringHill Suites Houston Northwest in Houston.

On the other hand, hotel redemptions for the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card start at 10,000 points per night. So, for example, the card’s current sign-up bonus can get you eight free nights at the Candlewood Suites Houston Park 10 in Houston.
