Who is the PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card best for?

The PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card is a secured card, designed to help build or rebuild credit scores for those with good/fair/poor/limited credit. A secured card requires that you submit a security deposit that serves as your line of credit.

It does charge a $39* annual fee, but allows you to submit up to $1,000 as a security deposit (with a $200 minimum), giving you more buying power. After a year of using the card responsibly, the issuer will allow an additional deposit up to $5,000.

The PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card reports account activity to all three credit bureaus and comes with an APR of 18.90% (fixed)*.

What we like about the PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card

  • Reports to all three credit bureaus

The PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card will report account and payment activity to all three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), which is what you want when trying to build or rebuild your credit history.

  • Fixed APR

Most credit cards these days have variable interest rates that fluctuate as the prime rate moves up or down. The PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card has a reasonable APR of 18.90% (fixed)*.

  • Security deposit up to $1,000

When rebuilding a credit score, it helps to keep your balances low relative to your credit limit. However, that’s really hard to do when you have a credit limit of a few hundred dollars. The PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card allows you to submit a security deposit of up to $1,000 (and up to $5,000 after a year of having the card), which not only helps with keeping your credit utilization low, but also helps when you need to use your credit card for more expensive purchases.

What to watch out for with the PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card

  • Annual fee

Not all secured cards charge an annual fee, but the PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card does at $39* a year.

  • No opportunity to graduate to an unsecured card

Some secured cards, such as the Discover it® Secured Credit Card, allow cardholders to “graduate” to an unsecured card with the same issuer after demonstrating responsible card management within a certain period of time (and you get your security deposit back).

That’s not the case with the PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card. Once your credit scores rise to a level where you can qualify for an unsecured card, you’ll need to close your PCB Secured Visa® Credit Card to get your security deposit returned (minus any fees and unpaid balance).
