If you’re looking for a credit card with a low interest rate, the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card has an intro APR period offer on balance transfers so long it blows the competition out of the water. Plus, you can avoid a balance transfer fee by taking care of any transfers you want to make in the first 60 days you have the card.
Unfortunately, while the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card does come with a low intro APR, it doesn’t offer a 0% intro APR period. If you’re searching for a 0% intro APR credit card so you can pay no interest at all during the intro window, we’ll cover a different card that might suit you better.

Three years of intro APR on balance transfers
Enjoy an introductory 3.25% variable APR for the first 36 months for all balances transferred within 60 days of account opening. Many credit cards come with intro APR periods of 12, 15 or 18 months, so offering three years of intro APR makes this card quite exceptional.
No balance transfer fee for the first 60 days
Many credit cards charge a fee of 3% to 5% of the amount transferred — and while it’s possible to find a card with no balance transfer fee, they’re not very common. The SunTrust Prime Rewards Card, however, charges $0 for balances transferred within 60 days of account opening, then $10 or 3% of the amount of the transfer, whichever is greater, making it a great option if you want to avoid a balance transfer fee.
Doesn't charge annual or foreign transaction fees
The card’s annual fee is $0, while its foreign transaction fee is $0 as well.
Comes with an easy-to-earn sign-up bonus
Earn $100 statement credit after you spend $500 on qualifying purchases in the first three months after account opening — that’s a relatively low spending requirement, making this sign-up bonus easier to earn than those offered by some competing credit cards.
However, it’s important to note two things.
First, the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card doesn’t offer an intro APR on purchases. This means you’ll accrue interest on your purchases at the regular APR of 11.24% - 21.24% variable unless you pay off your entire balance by your monthly due date.
Second, we recommend against using a balance transfer credit card for new purchases until after you’ve paid off the transferred balance in full. Adding purchases on top of a balance transfer can make it harder to get out of debt, which is typically why consumers turn to a balance transfer in the first place.
Doesn't have a 0% intro APR offer
Many credit cards with intro APR periods offer a 0% intro APR for a specified period of time. And while the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card offers a low APR during its intro period, it’s not 0% — so you’ll still be paying interest.
That said, 0% intro APR periods generally range from 12 to 21 months — the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card‘s intro APR window is substantially longer. If you need a longer time to pay off transferred debt, it might be worth paying a little interest to take advantage of how lengthy this card’s offer is.
No intro APR period for purchases
This card’s intro APR only applies to balance transfers, not purchases. If your main concern is high-interest debt you’re already carrying on another credit card, that might be exactly what you’re looking for. On the other hand, if you’re planning a big purchase and would like some time to pay it off without interest accruing, you may want to consider a different card with an intro APR on purchases.
The cash back rate is lacking
Cardholders earn a flat rate of 1% cash back with the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card. But considering that many cash back credit cards offer 1.5% — or even 2% — back on all purchases, 1% is subpar.
Still, it is possible to get a boost if you redeem your cash back into a SunTrust checking, savings or money market account. The bank offers a bonus of 10%, 25% or 50% “based on your deposit relationship with SunTrust.” Still, at best, that brings the value you’re getting up to 1.5% — which you could earn with no strings attached using a different flat-rate cashback credit card.
The Wells Fargo Reflect℠ Card offers a shorter intro APR than the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card, but has two things the latter doesn’t — a 0% intro APR and intro periods for both balance transfers and purchases.
You can get a 0% intro APR up to 21 months from account opening on qualifying balance transfers (after, a 14.49%-26.49% Variable APR applies). There’s also a 0% intro APR up to 21 months from account opening for purchases; after the promotional period, a 14.49%-26.49% Variable APR will apply.
Cardholders start out with an initial 18-month period of intro APR, and after demonstrating responsible behavior by making on-time payments, Wells Fargo can grant an extension of up to three months.
The Wells Fargo Reflect℠ Card does charge a balance transfer fee of 3% for 120 days from account opening, then up to 5%; min: $5. So, if you’re looking for a card with no balance transfer fee, the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card is the better choice.
You’ll pay a $0 annual fee to carry the Wells Fargo Reflect℠ Card, but it does charge a foreign transaction fee of 3%. It should also be noted the Wells Fargo Reflect℠ Card doesn’t offer a rewards program or a sign-up bonus.

You’re unlikely to find another card that offers an intro APR on balance transfers for three years. So if you’re struggling to get out of debt and need a long time to pay off a balance you’re carrying on another card, the SunTrust Prime Rewards Card could be exactly the financial tool you need. Just make sure to create a budget and stick to a monthly repayment plan that will allow you to pay off your transferred balance before the intro period ends, and don’t put new purchases on the card.
Plus, since this card lets you avoid a balance transfer fee, it helps save money in that regard, too.
But if you can work with a shorter intro APR period and don’t mind paying a balance transfer fee, you might prefer a card with a 0% intro APR, so you can avoid interest charges altogether. The Wells Fargo Reflect℠ Card is worth considering in that case.
