Americans are fortunate to enjoy an extremely competitive market for credit cards. But with hundreds of cards available from dozens of card issuers, it can be very difficult for applicants to find the best credit card for their needs.

In choosing the best cards offered, we looked at all types of cards—including rewards credit cards, cards with low interest rates, and cards designed for those who are building or rebuilding their credit. Each of these types of cards should appeal to a separate and distinct group of cardholders.

Credit Card Offers - August 2015

PenFed Promise

This card offers a 4.99% promotional APR for 12 months and then the most qualified cardholders will receive a standard APR of 7.99%. There is no annual fee or any other fees for this card.

Chase Slate

As a very simple card for those who are trying to pay off debt, Chase Slate offers new cardholders 15 months of interest-free financing on both new purchases and balance transfers, and is the only such offer with no balance transfer fee. To qualify for the balance transfer fee waiver, the transaction must be completed within 60 days of account opening. There is no annual fee for this card.

Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express

This rewards card offers points in the Starwood Preferred Guest program, which can be used for award nights or transferred to miles with over thirty different airline's frequent flier programs. These options make Starwood points some of the most valuable travel rewards offered. There is a $65 annual fee for this card that is waived the first year.

Capital One® Secured MasterCard

New cardholders with poor credit can offer as little as a $49 refundable deposit for this secured card and receive a $200 line of credit. There is no annual fee for this card. Take a closer look at this card.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

This rewards card offers double points for all travel and dining expenses and one point per dollar spent elsewhere. Points are worth 1.25 cents each when redeemed directly for travel reservations, or they can be transferred to several airline and hotel programs or Amtrak Guest Rewards. Chase Freedom

Chase Freedom offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in qualifying purchases made each quarter, and 1% cash back on all other charges. Each quarter, Chase announces a list of categories and specific merchants where cardholders can make purchases eligible for 5% cash back. There is no annual fee for this card.

Barclaycard Arrival Plus

With this rewards card, customers earn double miles on all purchases. Miles are worth one cent each as statement credits toward any travel expense, including airfare, hotels, car rentals, and cruises. Cardholders also receive a 10 percent rebate on the miles redeemed, making rewards worth 2.22 percent of spending. There is an $89 annual fee for this card that is waived the first year.

American Express Platinum

This high-end travel rewards card offers numerous travel perks including a $200 annual travel statement credit and access to several airport business lounge networks. For each dollar charged, cardholders earn one point in the American Express Membership Rewards program, which offers numerous redemption options including transfers of points to frequent flier miles. There is a $450 annual fee for this card.

Citi Simplicity

New applicants receive 21 months of interest-free financing on both new purchases and balance transfers, and a 12.99% standard APR for the most qualified applicants. There is no annual fee for this card, no late fees, and no penalty interest rate. Take a closer look at this card.

Only from Discover it® - Cashback Match™

Much like the Chase Freedom, the Discover it® - Cashback Match™ is a rewards card featuring 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases from eligible retailers made each quarter and 1% cash back on all other charges. The Discover it® - Cashback Match™ card will also waive cardholders' first late fee and has no penalty interest rate. There is no annual fee for this card.

Citi Double Cash

This rewards card offers a 2 percent return in the form of 1 percent at the time of purchase and another 1percent at the time of payment. There is no annual fee for this card. Take a closer look at this card.

Capital One® Venture Rewards

Like the Barclaycard Arrival Plus, Venture Rewards cardholders earn double miles on all purchases. Miles are worth one cent each as statement credits toward travel rewards. There is a $59 annual fee for this card that is waived the first year. Take a closer look at this card.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Business Edge Travel Rewards

This rewards card features double FlexPoints on the categories of purchases you make the most (gas, office supplies, or airlines). FlexPoints can be worth as much as two cents each toward airfare rewards. This card is $0 the first year and $55 every year after. Take a closer look at this card.

American Express Everyday

This rewards card offers valuable Membership Rewards points which can be transferred to several different airline and hotel programs. In fact, it's the only card with this feature that has no annual fee. Cardholders receive double points at U.S. supermarkets, plus earn 20 percent extra points when they make 20 or more transactions during a statement period.

U.S. Bank Visa Platinum

This simple card offers a standard interest rate of 9.99% APR to applicants with the highest credit scores. All cardholders receive 12 months of 0% APR financing on both new purchases and balance transfers, with a 3 percent balance transfer fee. There is no annual fee for this card.

BankAmericard® Secured

Cardholders submit a refundable deposit of $300 or more to open an account and can qualify for a standard card after making on-time payments for at least 12 months. There is a $39 annual fee for this card.

Capital One® Platinum

Cardholders get access to a higher credit line after making the first five monthly payments on time. There is no annual fee for this card.

Barclaycard Ring

This card offers applicants a low 8.00% APR standard interest rate, which also applies to balance transfers and cash advances. In addition, this card offers access to an online community of cardholders that participates in shaping the terms and conditions of this card and interacts directly with the card's product managers. Wells Fargo Secured Card

This secured card requires customers to submit a refundable security deposit of $300 which becomes their credit limit. There is a $25 annual fee for this card.

Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card For College Students

This card offers double ThankYou points on all dining and entertainment purchases and one point per dollar spent elsewhere. Points are worth one cent each toward a variety of rewards. There is no annual fee for this card that is available to students with a limited credit history.

U.S. Bank Secured Visa Card

New applicants must offer a refundable security deposit of at least $300, but then this card works much like a standard credit card with an 18.99% APR. There is a $29 annual fee for this card.

BankAmericard® for Students

This student card offers 0% APR promotional financing for 15 months on new purchases and balance transfers, with a 3 percent balance transfer fee and a standard APR of 10.99-20.99% depending on credit worthiness. There is no annual fee for this card.

First Progress Secured Credit Cards

This secured card offers a standard interest rate of as low as 14.99% with an annual fee of $39. Other versions offer annual fees as low as $29 at the expense of higher standard interest rates. Take a closer look at this card.

Iberia Bank

This no frills card offers an interest rate as low as 12.99% APR to the most qualified applicants. There is no annual fee for this card.

U.S. Bank FlexPerks® Travel Rewards Visa Signature® Card

This secured card features double FlexPoints on the categories of purchases you make the most (gas, groceries or airlines). FlexPoints can be worth as much as two cents each toward airfare rewards. There is a $49 annual fee for this card.
