As you have probably heard by now, American credit card issuers and merchants are currently transitioning to EMV technology. This technology provides greater security for point-of-sale transactions, and is already the standard for the majority of industrialized countries overseas.
While many card issuers and merchants were quick to make the switch, others are lagging behind. If you haven't received a new EMV chip credit card in the mail yet, you'll probably open your mail to one in the next few months.
5 EMV Chip Credit Cards to Consider
If you don't want to wait, there are plenty of cards that are already leading the way when it comes to EMV technology. Here are some of the top cards to sign up for if you're ready to transition to EMV chip technology right away:
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers much more than EMV chip technology; it is also considered one of the top rewards cards on the market. With this card, you'll earn points that can be used in the Chase Ultimate Rewards program, which is commonly cited as the top rewards program out there.
Travelers and cash-hungry consumers both like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card for different reasons. For starters, points earned with this card can be redeemed for travel through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal at a 20 percent discount. Second, you can transfer them to a slew of popular airline and hotel programs at a 1:1 ratio. If you don't travel, you can also redeem your points for cash or gift cards at rate of 1 cent per point, although certain low-value gift cards occasionally cost more.
The Chase Slate® card is another Chase offering that has led the way when it comes to EMV technology. Better yet, this card is consistently rated the top offer among 0% APR balance transfer options.
Not only do you get 0% APR on balance transfers and purchases for the first 15 months, but you won't have to pay a fee to transfer most balances during the first 60 days. That presents the opportunity for a huge savings over most balance transfer cards, since the majority charge a balance transfer fee equal to 3 percent of your total. If you have a large balance sitting at a high interest rate, you could reap huge interest savings by transferring a balance to your new Chase Slate® card and paying it off over 15 months.
Citi ThankYou® Premier Card
The Citi ThankYou® Premier Card offers EMV technology that is available right away, plus plenty of opportunity for rewards and perks. With this card, you'll earn a huge sign up bonus after spending $3,000 within 90 days, plus 3X points on travel including gas, 2X points on dining out and entertainment, and 1X points on everything else.
Citi ThankYou® points can be redeemed in a number of ways, including gift cards or straight-up cash back. You can also redeem them for discounted travel through the Citi travel portal or transfer them to more than a dozen travel transfer partners. Best of all, this card's $95 annual fee is waived the first year, giving you 12 months to try out its benefits without paying a single cent out-of-pocket.
Discover it® Miles
If you want to earn miles redeemable for any type of travel – and all without an annual fee, the Discover it® Miles card is one of the best options currently on the market. Not only does this card come with the most up-to-date EMV chip technology, but it awards you with "miles" you can redeem for any type of travel experience you desire. Instead of awarding different point amounts for different categories, however, this card offers a flat 1.5 miles on every dollar spent.
Better yet, Discover's current promotion offers to double the miles you have earned at the end of your first 12 months as a cardholder. So if you spend enough to earn 20,000 miles, you'll be awarded with another 20,000 after year one. Since each mile is worth 1 cent, 40,000 miles is worth $400 in travel credit you can use to book airfare, hotel stays, or any other type of travel. Or, if you prefer, you can turn your miles in for cash deposited directly into your bank account.
BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card
The BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card makes it easy to earn cash back for all your purchases, but with the convenience of EMV technology already included. With this card, you'll earn 3% cash back on gas and 2% cash back on grocery stores and wholesale clubs on your first $2,500 in combined gas and grocery store/wholesale club purchases each year, plus 1% cash back on all purchases. Plus, you'll earn a signup bonus worth $100 after you spend just $500 on your card within the first 90 days.
One factor that helps with this card's popularity is the fact that it doesn't charge an annual fee. That means you can keep the card for the long haul without ever worrying about paying a fee for the privilege, plus earn nonstop rewards as long as you keep using it. If you're fee-averse and mostly want to earn cash back, this is one card to keep your eye on.
If you are ready to transition to the new technology and are tired of waiting for your card issuer to come around, plenty of new cards can offer you the increased security of EMV chip technology right away. Just remember to conduct due diligence before signing up for any new credit cards. Not only do you want a card that rewards you for being a customer, but you'll want one that will serve your long-term credit needs as well.
