Transferring points or miles directly from one airline loyalty program to another would open a world of travel opportunities, but don’t get too excited as it’s not allowed. However, if you have certain credit cards, belong to hotel loyalty programs or use independent points transfer companies, there are ways to move rewards points into certain airline loyalty programs.

Below we outline the ways you can transfer your points into airline loyalty program miles.

Tip: Transferring hotel points to airline loyalty programs generally isn’t a good idea since the transfer rates are pretty poor. You should only transfer your hotel points if you only need a few extra miles to book an award flight or seat upgrade.

Use Points.com to transfer points out

Points.com’s exchange lets you move points from one airline program to another, and airlines that let you use Points.com to move points out include:

  • Aeroplan (Air Canada)
  • Amtrak
  • Frontier
  • Hainan Airlines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Icelandair
  • JetBlue

How does it work?

Points.com transfers are free, but your miles get diluted by the exchange rate. And once you send miles out you can’t reverse the transaction, so think hard before you make any transfer. After that, it takes between three and five days for your miles to transfer over.

Here are the airline programs — and Amtrak — available for tracking, exchanging and redeeming through Points.com:

Some exchanges are better than most. JetBlue to Amtrak is a good deal. You can turn 1,000 JetBlue points into 500 Amtrak Guest Rewards points. That’s good because JetBlue points are worth about 1.5 cents each, while Amtrak points are worth about 3 cents each, so doing the exchange doesn’t lose much value.

The example below shows how to do points exchanges between airlines (and Amtrak), along with how many miles or points you’ll need for an exchange.

Points.com is also a great way to keep track of all your mileage balances in one place, with one login, even for programs that can’t be exchanged. With Points.com you can see your balances on one screen with the following airlines:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Aeroflot Bonus
  • Air France KLM Flying Blue
  • Air India Flying Returns
  • Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan™
  • Alitalia Mille Miglia
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Asiana Club
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • China Airlines Dynasty Flyer Program
  • China Eastern Airlines Eastern Miles
  • China Southern Sky Pearl Club
  • Czech Airlines OK Plus
  • EL AL Matmid Frequent Flyer Club
  • Etihad Airways Etihad Guest
  • Eurowings Boomerang Club
  • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands
  • Finnair Plus
  • FlyBuys
  • Japan Airlines Mileage Bank
  • Korean Air SKYPASS
  • LANPASS
  • Lufthansa Miles & More
  • Malaysia Airlines Enrich
  • Philippine Airlines Mabuhay Miles
  • Porter Airlines VIPorter
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • South African Airways Voyager
  • Spirit Airlines FREE SPIRIT™
  • Sun Country Airlines® Rewards®
  • TAP Portugal Victoria
  • THAI Airways Royal Orchid Plus
  • Turkish Airlines Miles & Smiles
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club
  • Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer
  • Vueling Vueling Club
  • WestJet Rewards

There’s no fee to track points, and all the programs are linked behind the scenes so you don’t have to do manual updates.

British Airways/Iberia/Aer Lingus transfers

British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus have their own loyalty programs, even though they all are owned by holding company International Airlines Group (IAG). And each of them use Avios as their currency, although they carry different values.

It is possible to combine those Avios into a single account. To transfer them, to go to Avios.com and log in. Select ‘Your account’ and ‘Combine/Transfer Avios to or from your AerClub, British Airways Executive Club or Iberia Plus accounts’.

Note you can only transfer Avios if all details, including your surname, date of birth and email address are on your account, and you’re not in a household account. You must call Iberia customer service at 800-772-4642 to transfer your Avios to British Airways.

The bottom line

Most airlines don’t want you to move your miles elsewhere since they prefer you redeem them for flights or merchandise — or worse — let them expire, then charge you to get them back. But between hotels, credit cards and Points.com, you do have options.

American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Citi ThankYou offer the best points-to-miles exchange rates, making this an attractive option. Hotel loyalty programs and Points.com have a good list of airline partners, but the exchange rates aren’t as good as credit cards. Check your miles balances before making any transfers, and double- and triple-check bookings before you transfer as you often can’t retrieve points once they are moved.
