Don’t Plan Your Wedding Without One of These Three Cards

You have set your wedding budget: $10,000 for venue, $3,000 for the band, $2,000 for each the flowers and photographer. And yet somehow, everything seems to cost more than expected. Your dream venue has a $3,000 service fee, the band is charging for setup time and equipment, you want ranunculus instead of tulips, and, more likely than not, you’re going to need a couple of hours of overtime from the photographer. It’s your big day and, unfortunately, there is a big price tag associated with it, too. The average wedding costs $31,000 so why not earn some perks on those big purchases?

Whether you are looking to rack up miles to cover your honeymoon, earn cash back to offset some of the cost, or just put off paying for all these expenses up front, we have found the credit card to make the most out of the money you will be spending on your wedding. Here are the main two things we looked for: a strong sign-up bonus and a good rewards rate.

Best for Earning Travel Rewards for Your Honeymoon: Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

Weddings are stressful enough without worrying about which credit card to use for which purchases. This is why our top pick for earning travel rewards is the Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card. You earn 2 miles per dollar on all purchases, not just travel purchases. This means that your chair rentals, flowers, and even your dress will earn you miles to redeem for that dream Hawaiian honeymoon when you use your Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card also has a great sign-up bonus: 40,000 miles when you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months of approval. This alone is worth $400 in travel, a 13% return on the qualifying spend. Given all the expenses of a wedding, it’s easy to reach the requirements for a sign-up bonus.

Pros: The flat 2 miles per dollar means you can maximize the miles you earn on all purchases and not just travel purchases. Paired with the intro bonus worth $400, this card’s benefits can go a long way towards paying for your honeymoon.

Cons: If you don’t want to redeem for travel, the value of these rewards is greatly reduced. There is a $59 annual fee but it’s waived in the first year and, depending on your spending habits, the value can be recovered through rewards earned.

Best for Earning Cash Back: Discover it® - Cashback Match

If you are more interested in getting back some of the money you’ve spent in the form of cash back, the Discover it® - Cashback Match card will help you maximize your return. Discover is currently doubling all cash back earned at the end of the first year with no maximum limit. Say you spend $10,000 for your venue and use your Discover it® - Cashback Match card, at the standard 1% cash back, this would earn you $100, but with their promotion, they will double that $100 for a total of $200 cash back.

There is even more upside when you consider Discover’s rotating 5% cash back categories. Each quarter, Discover increases their cash back to 5% for purchases such as gas and ground transportation, restaurants, Amazon.com, department stores, and Sam’s club. For example, pay for your limousine rental in a quarter with the ground transportation rotating category and earn a whopping 10% cash back on that purchase once Discover matches at the end of the year.

Pros: Discover will match all cash back earned in the first year with no limit. You can even increase your cash back to 5% if you pay attention to the rotating spending categories.

Cons: Rotating categories can be a hassle to keep track of and many wedding expenses may not qualify for rotating categories. For example, if you get your wedding catered or it’s provided by the venue, Discover may not recognize it as a restaurant when calculating cash back.

Best for Putting Off Paying Interest: Chase Freedom Unlimited℠

Sometimes the expenses of a wedding feel like they are too much to handle all at once. Fortunately, many credit card issuers have offers that allow you to pay no interest for a generous introductory period. Based on both the length of its intro APR offer and the rewards rate on purchases, Chase Freedom Unlimited℠ is our top choice if you are looking to take the pressure off while paying for your wedding. Chase Freedom Unlimited℠ offers no interest for the first 15 months and also offers an unlimited 1.5% cash back on all purchases and an intro bonus of $150 when you spend $500 in the first three months. While Chase Freedom Unlimited℠ does offer 0% APR on balance transfers in addition to purchases, we recommend going with Chase Slate® if you are looking to transfer balances you’ve already made on your credit card. It has the same 0% intro APR deal while also offering an unmatched $0 balance transfer fee so you aren’t paying additional fees on the balance you’ve already accrued.
