How long do I need to file an SR-22 in Oregon?

Most Oregon drivers need to file an SR-22 with the state for three consecutive years, but it can be for up to five years.

If you stop carrying the SR-22 before that time, your insurance company will notify the DMV. The DMV will suspend your license again until you refile the SR-22. The three-year limit will either restart or continue.

Oregon offers three different types of SR-22 certificates:

  • Owner: This SR-22 is for owners of a vehicle.
  • Operator: This form is for a driver who does not own a car but has a suspended license.
  • On behalf of: This is for car owners who file for an employee or family member. It allows the SR-22 holder to drive only the owner’s car.

Who needs an SR-22?

You will need to file an SR-22 with the Oregon DMV if you:

  • Drive uninsured and are in an accident
  • Own a car involved in an uninsured crash
  • Are convicted of driving while uninsured, a DUI or other traffic offenses
  • Are applying for a hardship permit A hardship permit lets you drive a non-commercial vehicle if your license is suspended or revoked.

These are the most common reasons Oregon drivers need an SR-22. Contact the Oregon DMV for more information.

How do I get an SR-22 in Oregon?

Contact your car insurance company to have it file an SR-22 for you. Not all car insurance companies offer SR-22 filing. If yours doesn’t, compare car insurance quotes from several other companies to find one that does. This may help you get cheaper rates, as well.

Your insurer will make sure you have Oregon’s minimum car insurance limits.

It won’t file an SR-22 for you otherwise. You need to do this even if you don’t own a car.

Once your insurance company files your SR-22, the Oregon DMV will update your driving status. It will notify you to confirm when it reinstates your drivers license.
