The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has the most comprehensive list of travel protections among these three cards. It also offers a high rewards rate across a variety of categories, including hotels, car rentals, other travel purchases and dining. Chase Ultimate Rewards® points have some of the most flexible redemption options available.
The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is the best overall pick for a travel credit card. You’ll earn a competitive rewards rate, including 2X Miles on all purchases, and it comes with a lower annual fee compared to the other two cards. Plus, you’ll receive a $300 annual travel credit, which can offset most of the $395 annual fee.
The Platinum Card® from American Express provides the highest level of luxury among these three cards, offering access to over 1,400 airport lounges globally, including Centurion and Delta Sky Club lounges. This card also offers the highest welcome offer of the three and $1,000-plus worth of credits. But, this card has the highest annual fee at $695.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers the most diverse spending categories. Outside of earning up to 10x points on travel, you can earn 3x points on dining purchases. If dining isn’t one of your top spending categories, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers a higher 2X earning rate on all purchases, making it a great option for everyday spending.
The Platinum Card® from American Express offers narrower earning categories than the other two cards. Plus, the bonus rate on flights is limited to $500,000 each year.

The card that will offer you the most value depends on how you choose to redeem your rewards. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides the greatest value for travel redemptions, offering up to 1.5 cents per point, while the other two cards only give up to 1 cent per point. It also offers the highest overall value for redeeming cash back and gift cards. However, all three cards offer the best value when you transfer points to travel partners.

American Express has the most transfer partners with more than 20 hotel and airline partners. Capital One has 15+ partners, while Chase has 10+ partners.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve® has the most comprehensive list of travel insurance and purchase protections of the three cards. You’ll get primary rental car insurance, along with several additional coverage options not offered by the other cards, such as travel accident insurance, emergency evacuation and transportation insurance and emergency medical and dental coverage.
The Platinum Card® from American Express comes in close second to the Chase Sapphire Reserve® because it also has extensive coverage including access to the Global Assist Hotline4. While the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card doesn’t offer as much protection as the other cards, it has primary rental car coverage, which is better than what’s offered with The Platinum Card® from American Express.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers the most extensive lounge access. You’ll have access to the Global Lounge Collection, which includes over 1,400 lounges worldwide. Additionally, you’ll get complimentary access to lounge networks like the Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Club. You can also add extra card members for a fee, and they’ll receive the same lounge access as the primary cardholder.
Both the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card still offer great lounge access. With each card, you’ll get Priority PassTM Select, granting access to over 1,300 lounges globally. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card also provides access to several exclusive Capital One airport lounges. Ultimately, it comes down to whether you’re willing to pay a higher annual fee for access to more premium lounges.

Although The Platinum Card® from American Express has the highest annual fee of the three cards, it also offers the most generous credits. You’ll get more than $1,000 worth of credits, which can easily offset the $695 annual fee if you think you’ll use them. In contrast, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card has a lower $395 annual fee, but you’ll get a $300 annual travel credit, which can still cover most of the annual fee.

“I’m all about cash back credit cards. I love the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card because it’s an easy way to earn 2% cash back on everything I purchase. We’re a big Amazon household so I also love the Prime Visa. I’ve been able to use my cash back earnings to purchase furniture from Amazon for my home. Finally, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® is my favorite go-to credit card for dining out at restaurants.”
