Is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card worth it?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is worth it for frequent travelers. You can easily recoup the card’s $395 annual fee just by redeeming the annual $300 travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles. Plus, you’ll get a premium earning rate on travel purchased through the Capital One Travel portal and a higher-than-average 2X miles for all other purchases.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card comes with a slew of valuable travel protections, including trip cancellation insurance and lost luggage reimbursement. If lounge access is what you’re after, this card might be your best bet. It’s one of the most affordable options for premium lounge access if you use the yearly travel credits and bonuses to cancel out the $395 annual fee.

That said, more expensive premium cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express offer even more perks like additional travel credits and complimentary Hilton and Marriott elite status (enrollment required). If you have the budget for a pricier card and are looking for top-of-the-line travel perks, you should consider another travel card instead.

Who is the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card best for?

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is best for frequent travelers who are looking for travel perks and credits that will make their next trip more enjoyable. For those not looking to break the bank on a more expensive premium card, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is an excellent choice.

For people looking to spend more in order to get more perks out of their premium travel credit card, it may be worth it to apply for a card like The Platinum Card® from American Express instead.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card sign-up bonus

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers new cardmembers a huge sign-up bonus:
Earn 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, equal to $750 in travel.

Capital One miles are worth around 1 cent per mile when redeemed for travel, so this bonus is worth about $750 (or more, with the right travel transfer partner).

What’s it worth?: $750 in travel statement credits

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card rewards

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card allows you to earn 2X Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day; 10X Miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel; 5X Miles per dollar on flights and vacation rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

High rewards rates on travel make the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card one of the best premium travel cards on the market. If you’re looking for a card that will allow you to earn top rewards rates on flights, hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars with a lower annual fee than most premium cards, this card should be on your shortlist. You’ll be able to earn 10X miles on hotel bookings – a rate that rivals that of hotel rewards cards – without losing out on your hotel points. Note that you will need to book via the Capital One Travel portal in order to earn these high rewards rates.

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card also stands out when it comes to its rewards rate on all purchases. Most other premium travel cards only give you 1X points per dollar, but the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers 2X miles per dollar on every purchase. This means you’ll be able to rack up the miles quickly if you spend a lot on purchases outside of travel.

Best ways to redeem Capital One miles

Capital One miles are easy to redeem. You can turn your miles into travel statement credits or transfer them to a Capital One travel partner to squeeze the most value out of your rewards. Just like Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One has its own set of transfer partners that allow cardholders to maximize their rewards for at least 1 cent per mile.

That said, you also have several other redemption options available to you. Just know that they might not be as valuable:

Redemption optionMile value (in cents)
Cover select travel purchases (including vacation rentals)1
Redeem with PayPal0.8
Shop with Amazon0.8
Get gift cards0.8-1
Redeem for cash back0.5
Transfer your rewards to travel loyalty programsDepends on the transfer partner and ratio
Book a trip through Capital One travel1 cent
Transfer your rewards to another Capital One account1 cent
One drawback of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is that miles are only worth 0.5 cents when redeemed for cash back, which means you’ll lose value if you need to cash out your rewards in a pinch. Other premium cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card allow you to cash out your points at 1 cent per point.

Transferring miles to a transfer partner

You can transfer your Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card miles to 18 travel partners, typically at a 1:1 ratio. Unlike Chase and Amex, Capital One doesn’t currently partner with a major U.S. airline. That said, it does have some great airline partners, like Air Canada Aeroplan.

With a little savvy spending, you can get more than 1 cent in value per mile with most of these partners.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card travel credits

Among the top benefits of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card are the variety of travel credits for cardholders. These credits fully offset the card’s annual fee (see rates & fees):

  • Up to a $300 annual credit for bookings made on Capital One Travel. This is one of the most valuable travel credits offered by a travel card, but you have to use it on Capital One Travel. While Capital One’s travel site does offer a wide variety of options, you won’t be able to compare prices from other sites to snag the best deal. For a more flexible travel credit that’s easier to redeem, check out the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.
  • Up to a $120 credit for either TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card offers up to a $120 credit to cover your application fee for TSA PreCheck® or Global Entry. You should apply this travel credit toward your Global Entry application fee, since Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck®.
  • 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary. The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card gives members 10,000 bonus miles every account anniversary, which is equal to $100 toward travel. This annual gift will give you a little something to kickstart your travels each year (and help alleviate the annual fee).

Travel and purchase protections

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card comes with a number of travel and purchase protections designed to offer you some peace of mind.

  • Trip cancellation and interruption insurance: You’ll get trip cancellation and interruption insurance when you book your trip using your card.
  • Extended warranty protection: Eligible products you purchase with your card will automatically get extended warranties.
  • Return protection: Cardholders get 90 days of return protection for purchases made using your card.
  • Cell phone protection: When you pay your cell phone bill using your card, your phone is automatically protected for the following month. That means you can get reimbursed if your cell phone is stolen or damaged. You’ll pay a $50 deductible.
  • Lost luggage reimbursement: Your bags will be covered against carrier-caused loss or theft when you book your trip with your card.
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver: When you decline the auto insurance offered by the rental agency and book your car rental using your card, you’ll receive automatic car rental coverage.

Other Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card benefits

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is one of the most affordable cards for premium airport lounge access. You’ll get unlimited access to Capital One Lounges and to 1,300+ Priority Pass lounges worldwide. This is a great deal if you are able to use the yearly $300 travel credit and 10,000 bonus miles to cancel out the $395 annual fee (see rates & fees).

With Priority Pass access, cardmembers can visit thousands of airport lounges around the world. These lounges include perks like complimentary refreshments, free Wi-Fi, sleeping areas, spa treatments and more.

Capital One Lounges are full of premium amenities, like cycling and yoga rooms and futuristic nap pods, and cardholders will be allowed to bring two guests per visit for free. The only Capital One lounge currently open is in the Dallas/Fort Worth airport, but the Denver and Washington – Dulles airport lounges are scheduled to open soon.

Capital One Travel has thousands of flights, hotels and rental cars available for booking on its site. The innovative Capital One booking experience includes predictive pricing models and tools for finding the best deals possible. You’ll also have access to free price drop protection, 24/7 alert technology and the option to freeze a price and return to book it later.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card members will receive automatic Hertz President’s Circle status, which means you’ll get guaranteed upgrades and will have the ability to choose from the widest selection of cars. You’ll need to enroll to get this benefit, and you’ll retain this status through 2024.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card holders can add authorized users to an account for no fee (see rates & fees). Your additional cardmembers can enjoy most of the same benefits, and their purchases will earn you rewards.

Cardmembers have access to the Visa Infinite Concierge, which can help you with special requests, including things like dinner reservations, Broadway tickets, and access to music and sporting events.

Drawbacks

  • High annual fee

You’ll have to contend with a high annual fee. Keep in mind, though, that the travel credits you receive with the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card more than make up for the $395 annual fee (see rates & fees). Other premium credit cards charge more.

  • No automatic hotel elite status

Most other premium travel credit cards offer automatic hotel elite status, but this is missing from the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card’s list of benefits. The Platinum Card® from American Express, for example, offers both Marriott and Hilton elite status through card membership (enrollment required).

  • No major U.S. airline travel partners

While Capital One boasts 18 travel partners, none of its partner airlines are U.S. carriers. Competitor cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® have transfer partners like JetBlue, Southwest and United.

  • Travel credit and benefits tied to travel portal

In order to use the $300 annual travel credit and earn high rewards rates on travel purchases, you’ll need to book through Capital One Travel. While the Capital One Travel portal has plenty of options, you may find this restriction frustrating if you are used to looking for the best deal on every flight or hotel reservation.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card credit score

Capital One recommends an excellent credit score for the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. Make sure your credit score falls in this range and that you can afford the $395 annual fee before applying in order to increase your chances of acceptance (see rates & fees).

Verdict: More travel credits and perks for a higher annual fee

While it’s more expensive than the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, The Platinum Card® from American Express is the better choice if you’re seeking luxury travel benefits. Travel perks and credits include:

  • Access to exclusive American Express Centurion Lounges
  • Up to $240 digital entertainment credit (enrollment required)
  • Complimentary Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy elite status (enrollment required)

The two cards offer comparable welcome offers and earning rates. Keep in mind that the points that you earn with The Platinum Card® from American Express are more valuable thanks to the wide variety of Amex travel partners.

Verdict: Better transfer partners and a more flexible travel credit

While the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card gives it a run for its money, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® still holds the title of the most flexible luxury travel card. For a higher $550 annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers a broader list of travel transfer partners, including United and Southwest. It also has a more flexible $300 travel credit that applies to most travel purchases. Your account will be credited automatically when you make a purchase that counts as travel.

Your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points are worth more, too. You can redeem your points for travel through Chase TravelSM to get a 50% bonus. Plus, you can pair it with other Chase cards to get points in extra spending categories. This flexibility makes the points you earn with the card generally more valuable than Capital One Venture miles.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers many of the same benefits as the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, so the choice between the two mostly comes down to whether you think the extra flexibility (and extra points via other Chase cards) justifies the higher annual fee.

Verdict: A less expensive alternative for collecting rewards

If you care less about lounge access and more about collecting points for travel, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a lower-cost alternative to the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card.

Though it’s not considered a premium credit card, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the top travel credit cards on the market. It only charges a $95 annual fee and offers a similar rewards rate.

Like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card, the points you earn with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card are very flexible and valuable. They can be transferred to the same set of travel partners.

Should you get the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card?

If you spend at least $400 on travel every year and don’t need every luxury travel perk on the market, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card might be the right travel card for you. You’ll earn miles on everyday purchases — even non-travel expenses — and recoup the annual fee with recurring travel credits (see rates & fees). Plus, you can add authorized users to your account for free, which is an unusual perk for premium travel cards.

For travelers who want a lower annual fee, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or another, less expensive travel card might be a better option.
