What we like

  • Sign-up bonus

Cardholders can earn a $150 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first 3 months. This is a solid value for a relatively low spend requirement. If you spend approximately $167 each month on this card, you can reach the required spend amount to earn the bonus.

  • Flat-rate rewards

You’ll earn unlimited 1.5% cash rewards on purchases with the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® card. This is a solid cashback rate, and if you’re the type of shopper who doesn’t want to worry about activating rotating bonus categories or earning more on certain types of purchases and less on others, a flat-rate credit card like this one can make your life easier. Plus, with a qualified digital wallet such as Google Pay™ or Apple Pay®, earn 1.8% cash back for the first 12 months from account opening.

  • Intro APR periods

This card offers 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening. After, a 14.49%-24.99% (variable) APR applies. That’s a reasonable interest-free period for cardholders looking to make a big purchase and spread the payments out over time. There’s also a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on qualifying balance transfers. After, a 14.49%-24.99% (variable) APR applies. Be aware of the balance transfer fee, which is 3% for 120 days from account opening, then up to 5%; min: $5.

  • $0 annual fee

Thanks to the $0 annual fee, all the cash back you earn with this card is net money in your wallet — assuming of course that you don’t incur other fees or interest charges. To avoid incurring interest charges, pay your card off in full each month by the statement due date.

What to look out for

  • Foreign transaction fee

The Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® card charges a foreign transaction fee of 3%. If you’re traveling abroad, leave this card at home and take one with no foreign transaction fee instead.

  • Better rewards rates available

While 1.5% cash back on every $1 spent is not a bad rewards rate, there are cards that offer up to 2% cash back on every $1 spent. And if you’re willing to look beyond flat-rate cards to those offering elevated rewards in specific categories, or rotating quarterly bonus categories, you can earn 5% or even 6% back on some of your spending.

  • Beware eligibility restrictions

Have you opened any other Wells Fargo credit cards in the past 15 months? If so, be aware that it could impact your eligibility to get the sign-up bonus and/or intro APR periods that come with the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® card. Wells Fargo’s website explains it this way:

“You may not be eligible for introductory annual percentage rates, fees, and/or bonus rewards offers if you opened a Wells Fargo Credit Card within the last 15 months from the date of this application and you received introductory APR(s), fees, and/or bonus rewards offers – even if that account is closed and has a $0 balance.”

Why settle for earning 1.5% cashback when you could earn 2% back on every purchase? The card that sets the standard for flat-rate cash back is the Citi® Double Cash Card . You’ll earn 2% on every purchase with unlimited 1% cash back when you buy, plus an additional 1% as you pay for those purchases. And the best part? Cardholders earn these generous rewards for a $0 annual fee.

The Citi® Double Cash Card also comes with a lengthy intro period to pay off debt transferred from another credit card. Enjoy an intro APR of 0% for 18 months on balance transfers, after which a 13.99% – 23.99% (variable) APR applies. The balance transfer fee is 3% of each balance transfer; $5 minimum.

Where the Citi® Double Cash Card falls short is in charging a foreign transaction fee. Leave this card at home when traveling abroad, otherwise you’ll find yourself charged a 3% fee on every transaction. In addition, the Citi® Double Cash Card also lacks an intro purchase APR and a sign-up bonus, so consumers looking to finance a big purchase might prefer the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® card.

Is this card right for you?

If you’re looking for decent flat-rate rewards on every purchase you make, as well as a relatively easy-to-earn sign-up bonus and solid intro APR offers on purchases and balance transfers, you’ll probably like the Wells Fargo Cash Wise Visa® card. However, there are flat-rate cashback cards that earn up to 2% back on every purchase, such as the Citi® Double Cash Card . And though an extra half a percentage point might not seem like much at first, it adds up. For example, if you spend $12,000 on your card in a year, you’d earn $240 in cash back with a 2% card but just $180 in cash back with a card earning 1.5% back.
