The Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card earns 1.5% cash back on every purchase, every day; 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through capital one travel (terms apply) and is available to applicants with fair/limited credit. There’s no sign-up bonus with this card.

You’ll pay an annual fee of $39 to carry the Capital One QuicksilverOne Cash Rewards Credit Card, but that amount can be recouped in cash back if you spend $2,600 a year.

The APR is high at 26.99% (variable), but that’s not unusual for cards aimed at applicants in this credit bracket. Pay your card off in full each month and you can avoid incurring interest charges.

You can use the card abroad without worrying about a foreign transaction fee because there is none.

This card is best for those with fair credit (a FICO® Score between 580 and 669) who are working to improve their credit score. The $39 annual fee is reasonable, and as long as you pay the card on time every month and don’t max it out, it can help you improve your credit standing.

The Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card is another card without rewards or a sign-up bonus. However, it’s accessible to applicants with poor/limited credit and charges a $0 annual fee.

Because this is a secured credit card, you must submit a security deposit. You can get your deposit back if you pay the card off in full and close your account or if Capital One graduates you to an unsecured card.

Make sure to pay off your balance in full each month, because this card’s APR is a high 26.99% (variable).

If you need to rebuild your credit, the Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card is an excellent financial tool. It reports account and payment activity to all three credit bureaus, so as long as you’re keeping your utilization (how much of your credit limit you’re using, essentially) low and always paying on time, the Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card can help you boost a sagging credit score.

Where this card stands out is its unique security deposit structure. While most secured cards require you to submit a security deposit in the amount of your desired credit limit, if you’re approved for the Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card, Capital One will set your minimum deposit at $49, $99, or $200. Whatever your minimum deposit is set at, you’ll get a starting credit limit of $200. This has the potential to save you money if you can’t afford to put up a $200 deposit (though the lower deposits aren’t guaranteed).

With the Capital One Spark Cash Plus, cardholders earn 2% cash back on every purchase; 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through capital one travel.

The sign-up bonus has the potential to offer excellent value, but your business must meet two high spending targets: Earn up to a $1,000 cash bonus; $500 once you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months, and $500 once you spend $50,000 in the first 6 months of account opening.

You also have the chance to earn a $200 cash bonus every year you spend $200,000 or more on the card.

The Capital One Spark Cash Plus comes with a $150 annual fee. Because this is a charge card, you must pay your balance in full every month. If you don’t, you’ll be charged a 2.99% monthly late fee.

And, because this is a charge card, you get a flexible spending limit rather than a set credit limit like with traditional credit cards. This could be handy if you frequently need to make big purchases.

Because of its $150 annual fee, the Capital One Spark Cash Plus is best for businesses with a large enough cash flow to justify paying that amount. If you run a small operation, such as selling the occasional handcrafted item on Etsy, this probably isn’t the small business card for you.

On the other hand, if you find yourself frequently having to make large enough purchases, then you’ll appreciate this charge card’s flexible spending limit and flat-rate cashback program.

Be aware that a flexible spending limit doesn’t mean you have unlimited spending power on the card. Rather, what you can spend will adapt based on a variety of factors, such as purchase and payment history.

Plus, earn $500 cash back once you spend $4,500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening. That could be hard for some smaller volume businesses, since it will take $1,500 per month to hit the target.

If you’re looking for a small business credit card with no annual fee, a solid flat-rate cashback program, and a decent sign-up bonus, the Capital One Spark Cash Select - $500 Cash Bonus might be just what you need.

FAQs about the best Capital One credit cards

The best Capital One credit card depends on your spending habits, your credit history and whether or not you’re willing to pay an annual fee. For example, we rank the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card as the best overall Capital One card. It’s aimed at applicants with excellent/good credit and offers a generous cashback program. But if you’re looking for a first credit card, you might have better luck applying for the Capital One Platinum Credit Card.

Possibly. The Capital One Platinum Credit Card is aimed at applicants with fair/limited credit, and the Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card is aimed at applicants with poor/limited credit. However, as with any credit card, your application for either of those cards can be denied based on a variety of factors.

You might be able to upgrade or downgrade your Capital One credit card by requesting what’s called a “product change.” Capital One might offer a product change to you through your online account or you might have to call the issuer and ask. A situation where you might want to request an upgrade is if you’ve had a card for a while that doesn’t earn rewards and you want to change it to one of the cashback or travel rewards cards. Conversely, it might make sense to request a downgrade to a card with no annual fee if you’re paying an annual fee for one of the more high-end cards and no longer use the card enough to make the fee worthwhile. Know that if you do choose to upgrade or downgrade, you won’t be eligible for any sign-up bonus. You’ll have to apply directly for the card to get any bonus.

If your Capital One credit card earns cash back or miles, those rewards won’t expire as long as your account is open and in good standing. And, unlike some cards from other issuers, your Capital One card won’t decrease your earning rate for the rest of the quarter or year after you hit a spending cap. So, in this regard, Capital One credit cards that offer cash back or miles do let you earn unlimited rewards.

If you don’t know how good or bad your credit score is, you should check it before applying for a new credit card. One way to check your credit score is by signing up for a free LendingTree account.

It’s also smart to check Capital One’s credit card preapproval tool before you apply for a card (note that the tool may not consider you for all the cards Capital One issues). While being preapproved doesn’t guarantee acceptance once you actually apply for a card, it does indicate that you’ve got a decent chance of being approved.

Plus, it doesn’t hurt your credit score to use the tool — though once you actually apply there will be a hard inquiry, which can be expected to drop your score a few points.

Methodology

In selecting the best Capital One credit cards, we considered factors such as rewards rates, sign-up bonuses and how good your credit score needs to be for you to be considered for each card.

Many of the cards we selected for the best Capital One cards charge no annual fee. If a card does charge an annual fee, it also offers enough value through rewards, sign-up bonuses, and perhaps statement credits that the annual fee is worth it for consumers with specific needs and spending habits.

Finally, if a card offers helpful features, that weighed in its favor of being included. For example, the Capital One Spark Cash Plus is a charge card with no preset spending limit, which might be helpful for business owners who often find themselves needing to make big purchases.
