Is the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card a good card?

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is one of the most valuable no-annual-fee travel credit cards you can get. Its flat rewards rate means you could use the card on everyday purchases without having to keep track of different bonus categories. Plus, you’re able to take advantage of Capital One’s transfer partners to redeem miles at a higher value.

This card might not be the best choice if you travel more than a couple times a year and are looking for a range of travel benefits. If that sounds like you, a more premium travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates & fees) might be a better fit. You’ll have to pay annual fees, but you’ll earn more rewards and better travel perks in return.

Also, it’s not the best deal if you don’t want to deal with transferring miles. You can find other no-annual-fee travel credit cards with higher rewards rates.

How does it compare to other travel cards?

First-year card value: $836 versus $743 for the average travel card
Ongoing annual card value: $476 versus $433 for the average travel card

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card benefits

  • Good sign up bonus

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card holders can earn a bonus of 20,000 miles once you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $200 in travel.

This is a moderate sign-up bonus, which is what you can expect from a no-annual-fee card (see rates & fees). Compared to similar cards, it has an easier sign-up bonus to earn — you won’t have to spend as much to earn it. It’s common for other cards to require a spending threshold of around $1,000.

  • Rewards are easy to earn and redeem

If you’re looking for a travel rewards card that’s simple to use, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a good choice. It offers a simple, flat rewards rate of 1.25 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day; 5 Miles per dollar on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel.

You can redeem your Capital One miles by applying them as a statement credit for any qualifying travel purchase for a value of 1 cent. And with no blackout dates or other restrictions, miles are flexible and straightforward to redeem.

Venture miles can also be redeemed for cash back as well as gift cards. Further, you can use your miles to book new travel reservations through capitalone.com or the Capital One Rewards Center.

    Redemption options

    • Cover select travel purchases (including vacation rentals)
    • Redeem with PayPal
    • Shop with Amazon
    • Get gift cards
    • Redeem for cash back
    • Transfer your rewards to travel loyalty programs
    • Book a trip through Capital One travel
    • Transfer your rewards to another Capital One account
Although you’re able to redeem your Capital One miles as cash back, it’s not a wise way to use them — points are worth less than 1 cent apiece when redeemed this way. If you prefer to use cash back rewards over miles, then a cash back credit card like the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is a better choice for you.
  • Transfer miles to more than 15 travel loyalty programs

You can redeem miles by transferring them to Capital One’s transfer partners, mostly at a 1:1 ratio (e.g., 1,000 miles is worth 1,000 points with some partners).

    • Accor Live Limitless (2:1 ratio)
    • Aeromexico Club Premier (1:1 ratio)
    • Air Canada Aeroplan (1:1 ratio)
    • Air France KLM Flying Blue (1:1 ratio)
    • Asia Miles (1:1 ratio)
    • Avianca LifeMiles (1:1 ratio)
    • British Airways Avios (1:1 ratio)
    • Choice Hotels Choice Privileges (1:1 ratio)
    • Emirates Skywards (1:1 ratio)
    • Etihad Airways (1:1 ratio)
    • EVA Air Infinity MileageLands (2:1.5 ratio)
    • Finnair Finnair Plus (1:1 ratio)
    • Qantas Frequent Flyer (1:1 ratio)
    • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer (1:1 ratio)
    • TAP Air Portugal Miles&Go (1:1 ratio)
    • Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles (1:1 ratio)
    • Virgin Red Virgin Points (1:1 ratio)
    • Wyndham Rewards (1:1 ratio

This benefit alone makes this one of the most valuable no-annual-fee travel credit cards available (see rates & fees). By transferring your Capital One miles to rewards partners, you can significantly increase the value of your miles.

Note that Capital One’s partners are mostly international airlines, so you can’t transfer them directly to U.S. airlines like you can with some Chase or American Express rewards partners. However, since most of Capital One’s transfer partners belong to airline alliances, you can use their partner network to fly virtually anywhere, including the U.S. — if award flights are available.

  • Intro APR on purchases and balance transfers

If you need to finance a large purchase and pay it off over time, you can do so without incurring interest charges for more than a year. That’s because the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card offers an APR of 0% intro on purchases for 15 months. After that, a regular APR of 19.49% - 29.49% (variable) applies to any unpaid portion of the balance (see rates & fees).

The card also offers an APR of 0% intro on balance transfers for 15 months, then a regular APR of 19.49% - 29.49% (variable) applies (see rates & fees).**

This APR is an excellent length, making it a great option if you need to finance an upcoming trip.

**A balance transfer fee applies for promotional rates that Capital One may offer.

Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card drawbacks

  • Mediocre rewards earning rate if you don't transfer miles

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card lets you earn miles at a reasonable pace, there are other flat-rate cards — like the Discover it® Miles and Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card card — that offer a higher amount of rewards per dollar. If you don’t plan to take advantage of Capital One’s transfer partners, you’re likely better off with one of these cards.

  • Travel partners don't include any major U.S. airlines

Although this card has several transfer partners to choose from, none of them are major U.S. airlines. You can still find flights with major airlines via alliance partners, but this can be a complicated process. For example, Delta is a member of the SkyTeam alliance. If you wanted to fly with Delta Air Lines, you would have to book a codeshare flight through a Capital One partner that’s part of the SkyTeam alliance, like Air France.

This can be worth it in many cases, but it is a complex process that travel card beginners might find confusing. Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards, on the other hand, do have major U.S. airline partners, giving you some simpler point-transfer options.

  • Light on travel benefits

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card doesn’t come with many valuable travel benefits, like hotel credits or TSA PreCheck®/Global Entry credits. If you’re likely to use those credits, there are cards with a higher annual fee — like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card (see rates & fees) or Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card — that offer more benefits.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a higher-end version of the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card. It has a higher annual fee of $95 (see rates & fees) but comes with more benefits, like a TSA PreCheck®/Global Entry credit and a better sign-up bonus and rewards rate.

You can earn 2 Miles per dollar on every purchase, every day; 5 Miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel. You can also earn 75,000 Miles once you spend $4,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening.

Both cards come with the same transfer partners, though the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is better for more frequent travelers and those likely to take advantage of its credits. But if you’re looking for something simpler for no annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a better choice (see rates & fees).

Like the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, the Discover it® Miles offers a simple approach to earning rewards — but at a slightly higher rate.

Discover it® Miles cardholders earn 1.5 Miles per dollar on all purchases. The card also offers a generous sign-up bonus: Unlimited Mile-for-Mile match for all new cardmembers—only from Discover. Discover gives you an unlimited match of all the Miles you’ve earned at the end of your first year. You could turn 35,000 Miles to 70,000 Miles. There’s no signing up, no minimum spending or maximum rewards. Just a Miles-for-Miles match.

It offers similarly flexible miles that can be redeemed for cash or travel, including hotels, airfare, car rentals, restaurants, gas stations and more. However, it doesn’t give you the option to transfer miles. If you want to maximize the value of your miles, you may be better off with the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card.

The Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card also might be the better choice if you’re planning to use your card for international travel, since Discover isn’t always accepted abroad.

The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is also superior to the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card if you’re looking for a $0-annual-fee travel card with the simplest redemption options.

It has a higher rewards rate of 1.5 points per $1 spent on all purchases. Plus, it has a higher sign-up bonus: 25,000 online bonus points after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening - that can be a $250 statement credit toward travel purchases.

If you want the simplicity of statement credits for travel purchases and don’t want to deal with the hassle of transferring miles, then the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card would likely be better for you.

Also, Bank of America Preferred Rewards® members can earn 25% to 75% more points on purchases, which can help you earn points faster to redeem for travel.

Is the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card right for you?

If you’re looking for a no-annual-fee travel rewards card to get your travel world journey started, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is one of several good options for you (see rates & fees).

The major advantage it has over similar no-annual-fee travel cards like the Discover it® Miles and the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is that you can transfer your miles to travel partners for a higher value. Capital One transfer partners are mostly international airlines, but you can get great deals with major U.S. airlines by strategically transferring via alliance partners.

Or, if you’d prefer the same travel benefits offered by the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card, but with an even higher rewards rate and sign-up bonus, you may want to look at the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. You’ll have to pay a $95 annual fee (see rates & fees), but you’ll get travel credits that can make up for it.
