Who's the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card best for?

The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card is geared toward consumers with excellent/good credit, and who are looking for a card with robust rewards on dining and entertainment purchases. It does have a $95 annual fee, however, so you’ll need to make sure you reap enough in rewards to justify the fee.

We look at what the card offers and present an alternative card that offers a similar cashback rewards program for dining, but for no annual fee, and that has a very generous intro APR on purchases, which the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card does not offer.

What we like about the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

  • Cashback rewards rate on dining/entertainment

The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card offers a very generous cashback rate on dining and entertainment purchases, with no limits on how much you can earn. Earn unlimited 4% cash back on dining, entertainment, and popular streaming services, 3% at grocery stores and 1% on all other purchases.

Here are the types of dining establishments where you can earn the higher rewards rate with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card: Restaurants, cafes, bar, lounges, fast-food chains and bakeries.

For the entertainment category, these types of purchases also qualify for the higher rewards rate: Movie tickets, sports events, theater tickets, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, dance halls, record stores, pool halls and bowling alleys. Plus, Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card cardholders can earn 8% cash back on all Vivid Seats ticket purchases through January 31, 2022.

Grocery purchases at these types of establishments also earn a higher rewards rate: supermarkets, meat lockers, dairy products stores, specialty markets.

Your cash back doesn’t expire as long as your account is open, and can be redeemed in any amount.

  • Sign-up bonus

New Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card cardholders can earn a one-time $300 cash bonus once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening . While generous, this is a high spending requirement, so make sure you’ll be able to meet that before applying.

What to watch out for with the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card

  • Annual fee

The annual fee for the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card is $95. You’ll have to spend $2,375 a year on purchases earning 4% cash back to recoup the amount of the fee.

A no-annual-fee credit card earning 3% cash back on the same purchases would net $71.25 in cash back.

The tipping point for where you start earning more despite the annual fee is at around $10,000 spent on purchases that earn 4%. After subtracting the annual fee, the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card nets $305 in cash back, while a card earning 3% with no annual fee would net $300.

  • No intro APR

Some competing cashback cards, such as the Chase Freedom Flex℠, offer an introductory 0% APR for over a year to new cardholders. The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card does not currently offer an intro APR for purchases or balance transfers.

Is the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card right for you?

Whether or not the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card is the right card for your wallet depends on your spending habits. If you frequently dine out, order in, and hit up entertainment events (such as movies and sporting events), the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card can reward you handsomely. If you spend in those categories but not enough to recoup the annual fee, however, you might prefer the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card or the Chase Freedom Flex℠.

To put things simply, the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card is only worth it if you spend $10,000 or more per year on dining and entertainment. Those who spend less than that can actually net more cash back with a card that earns 3% and charges no annual fee.
