Determining the best Wells Fargo credit card depends on your individual needs, spending habits and preferences. If you want a solid rewards card with no annual fee, the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card and Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card are both great choices. However, if you’re looking to finance a large purchase or complete a balance transfer, the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card will be your best option.
Applying for a Wells Fargo credit card is similar to other credit card application processes. Before you apply, make sure you check your credit score, as Wells Fargo typically only accepts applicants with good to excellent credit. You’ll also need to provide some basic personal information, like your name, address and Social Security number. Follow the steps below, and you’ll be on your way to becoming a Wells Fargo cardholder.
1. Check your credit score
You should first check your credit score, as you will most likely need a FICO Score of 670 to 850 to get a Wells Fargo credit card. There are several free ways to do this online, including via LendingTree. You can also use AnnualCreditReport.com to make sure there aren’t any errors that could affect your credit score.
2. Compare card offers
Next, compare the Wells Fargo credit cards to see which one works best for you. This will depend largely on your personal spending habits and financial goals. For example, if you’re looking for a balance transfer card with a long intro APR, the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card will be the best option. However, if you want to earn cash back on everyday purchases, we’d recommend the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card.
3. See if you prequalify
You can check to see if you prequalify for a Wells Fargo credit card by visiting the website here. Although prequalification doesn’t guarantee approval, it’s a great way to determine which card(s) will give you the best chance for approval. It’s also important to note that the prequalification process is a “soft credit pull,” meaning it won’t have a negative impact on your credit score.
4. Apply for the card
Now that you’ve done the research, it’s time to apply. You can apply online, in person at a local Wells Fargo branch, over the phone or by mail. Online applications typically get the fastest response, with mailed applications taking the longest — after that, it’s simply a waiting game. Depending on the type of rewards that you earn, you may be able to redeem Wells Fargo rewards for cash from a Wells Fargo ATM, statement credits, gift cards, travel and more. The best credit cards for beginners are secured credit cards, as they’re easier to get if you have a minimal credit history. Since Wells Fargo stopped offering the Wells Fargo Secured Credit Card in 2021, there are no longer any Wells Fargo credit cards we could consider easy to get. Most cards in the current Wells Fargo lineup require a FICO credit score of at least 670. If your score is lower than that, we recommend working on improving your credit score before applying for any of Wells Fargo’s credit cards. In the meantime, you can look into getting a secured credit card to build or rebuild your credit.
Unfortunately, Wells Fargo is no longer offering a student credit card, as the Wells Fargo Cash Back College℠ Card was removed from the card lineup in 2021. However, you’ll find that there are plenty of other great options out there as you search for the best student credit card.
