One reason Allstate is more expensive than Progressive for car insurance might be that it sells more policies to high-risk drivers. This could mean young drivers or even adults with tickets, accidents or DUIs on their records.

Another reason could be that Allstate has more customers who drive expensive vehicles than Progressive does. Those drivers pay more for car insurance than drivers with cheaper vehicles do, which would raise Allstate’s average rate.

Progressive isn’t the cheapest car insurance company around, but it is usually cheaper than Allstate. One reason for that could be that it sells coverage to different drivers than Allstate does. If Progressive’s customers tend to be better drivers, or drive safer cars, its average rate would be lower.

Allstate is cheaper than Progressive for home insurance, but not car insurance. That said, home insurance from Allstate is only slightly cheaper than it is from Progressive. Allstate’s average rate is $2,560 a year, or $213 a month. Progressive’s average rate is $2,648 a year, or $221 a month.

Unless otherwise noted, our sample driver is a 30-year-old male with a clean driving record and good credit. The sample vehicle is a 2015 Honda Civic EX. Our sample teen is an 18-year-old male with no tickets or accidents.

Liability policies include the minimum car insurance requirements, which vary by state. Full coverage includes:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: $50,000 per person/$100,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection/medical payments: Minimum limits, where required
  • Collision: $500 deductible
  • Comprehensive: $500 deductible


Sample home insurance policies include:
