What is a secured credit card?

A secured credit card requires you to submit a security deposit, which serves as your line of credit. The deposit acts as collateral to protect the issuer in the event you don’t pay off what you charge to the card.

Security deposits are generally refundable once you pay off your card balance in full and close the account, or if the issuer transitions you to an unsecured card after you demonstrate responsible card usage.

How do secured credit cards work?

Secured credit cards are typically designed for individuals with non-existent, limited or poor credit who may not qualify for a traditional unsecured credit card.

These cards often serve as stepping stones for consumers to build their credit profile after demonstrating responsible card usage — meaning, paying your bill in full and on time each month and keeping your balance well below your credit limit.

Upon approval and in exchange for a refundable security deposit, an issuer will grant you a credit limit that is often equal to the amount you deposit. For example, if you deposit $500, you’ll typically get a $500 line of credit. The more you deposit, the higher your potential credit limit will be (as long as you are approved for that amount by the issuer).

If you’re able to graduate to an unsecured credit card — or if you pay off your balance in full and close your account — your security deposit will be refunded to you.

Best high-limit secured credit card FAQs

As long as your secured credit card reports your card account and payment activity to the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion), you can boost your credit score by paying your bill on time each month and keeping your credit utilization low.

Generally, the best secured credit cards offer a reasonable ongoing purchase APR and $0 annual fee. The card should also report your card account and payment activity to all three major credit bureaus, provide tools to help build your credit and offer the opportunity to graduate to an unsecured card.

Whether using a traditional credit card, secured credit card, store credit card or student credit card, a key factor in building your credit is to use the card responsibly. That includes:

  • Paying your balance on time and in full each month.
  • Maintaining a credit utilization ratio below 30%.
  • Applying for a credit sparingly and only when it’s truly needed.

Methodology

To select the best card for each of these categories, our credit card experts compared secured credit cards with the highest potential credit limits on LendingTree.com and on major issuer and credit union sites.

While we primarily made our choices based on the highest possible credit limit. Other factors that came into play were the interest rates, rewards programs and annual fees. Additionally, we took into account benefits offered by each card, such as cellphone insurance and extended warranty protection.
