While there are several credit cards available for individuals with limited or poor credit, there are only a select few that don’t require credit checks for approval. The OpenSky® Secured Visa® Credit Card is at the top of our list due to its limited fees, reasonable APR, possible credit limit increase and nationwide access. Plus, it doesn’t require a bank account for approval.

Trying to find a credit card you’ll be approved for when you have bad credit can feel like the odds are stacked against you. Although responsible use of a credit card can help rebuild your credit score, applying for a new card means the issuer will run a credit check, and a history of financial missteps will likely result in a denial. That’s where a card with no credit check may be your saving grace.

Credit cards that don’t require a credit check are rare, and those that do exist tend to be secured cards. With a secured credit card, you’re required to submit a security deposit, which will act as your line of credit. If you don’t pay back what you charge to the card, the issuer confiscates your deposit.

In other respects, a secured card functions like a traditional credit card: You can use it to make purchases in the same way you would an unsecured card. In addition, responsible use of the card will help boost your credit profile — as long as it reports to the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion).

We’ve reviewed the cards available on LendingTree as well as from credit card issuers, and selected the top no credit check credit cards for the following categories.

Self Visa® Credit Card

Highlights
  • No credit check required
  • Ability to increase your credit limit over time
  • Reports your credit activity to the three major credit bureaus

Like the other cards in this list, the Self Visa® Credit Card is a secured card that doesn’t run credit checks on its applicants. It requires a low minimum security deposit of $100.

But before you can apply for the Self Visa® Credit Card, you’ll need to have a credit builder loan with Self, the online financial institution that issues this card. With that type of loan, you’ll pay a certain amount each month over a set period of time. Because this activity is reported to the three major credit bureaus, it can help you add positive payment information to your credit profile. Self puts your payments into a certificate of deposit at a partner bank, and once you finish your payments, you’ll get the money you paid back, minus any fees and interest.

It’s important to note that a credit builder loan does not provide immediate access to money — the goal is to demonstrate responsible payment behavior and increase your credit score.

The Self Visa® Credit Card charges a $25 annual fee.

The Self Visa® Credit Card is a solid choice for consumers willing to play the long game with building credit — since you need to have a credit builder loan with Self before you can get this secured card.

  • Make three monthly payments on time

Methodology

To select the best card for each of these categories, our credit card experts compared cards designed for individuals with poor, limited or nonexistent credit that do not require credit checks on both LendingTree.com and issuer sites.

While there are only a select few cards that fit that criteria, we chose our top picks based on factors like the interest rates on purchases, the required security deposits, the annual fees and any additional fees.

Best no credit check credit card FAQs

You should never expect guaranteed approval when applying for a credit card. Even if you’re prequalified for a card, that simply means your chances are better, but you could still be denied after applying.

The primary difference between these cards is that a secured card requires a refundable deposit, which typically serves as your line of credit. The deposit is used as collateral in case the card user doesn’t pay off the purchases charged to the card.

You can check your credit score in a variety of ways without generating a hard inquiry, so it won’t be negatively affected. For example, you can request a free copy of your FICO Score every 30 days through Experian, or sign up for a free credit score through the LendingTree app.

Additionally, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the three major credit bureaus to provide individuals with free credit report through AnnualCreditReport.com — in particular, you’ll receive one any time that a company takes adverse action against you, such as rejecting you for a credit card or loan.

If you want to improve your credit score to help increase your chances of being approved for credit cards or loans, the following steps can help:

  • Paying your bills on time and in full each month
  • Maintaining a low credit utilization ratio
  • Minimizing the amount of new accounts you open
