Who is the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card best for?

The Amazon Business Prime American Express Card is designed for businesses that are Amazon Prime or Business Prime members that rely heavily on Amazon purchases and products.

The card offers a unique rewards program where business owners can get 5% cash back or 90-day financing term on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market on the first $120,000 in purchases per calendar year.

Meanwhile, the regular rewards rate is 2% back at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers, 1% on other purchases.

If your business has a fluctuating cash flow and sometimes carries a balance, this card provides both short- and long-term value with interest-free payment terms on select purchases that can allow you to pay for purchases over 90 days without accruing interest. That can be helpful during months when you may be unable to pay your bill by your due date. And, if your cash flow is doing OK, you can opt to earn rewards instead of using an interest-free payment term.

While there is a no annual fee, your business must be an Amazon Prime or Business Prime member ($119 and $69 a year, respectively).

In this review, we’ll go over who should consider opening an Amazon Business Prime American Express Card, the numerous benefits cardholders receive, and how it stacks up to the competition.

What we like about the

  • High rewards rate on Amazon purchases

With the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card, cardholders can reap 5% cash back (or spread out the cost interest-free over 90 days) on Amazon-affiliated purchases, including Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods. That high rewards rate applies to the first $120,000 in purchases every calendar year, and then reverts to 1% cash back after meeting that cap.

The potential savings could run as high as $6,000 a year, provided you meet the $120,000 cap.

Know that if you choose the 90-day interest-free financing option for a purchase, you will not qualify for the 5% cash back.

Rewards points can be redeemed as a statement credit or used towards eligible purchases at Amazon.com or Amazon.com/Business.

  • Welcome offer

While not overly generous, the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card does offer new cardholders a welcome offer: Eligible Prime Members get a $125 Amazon.com Gift Card upon approval for the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card.

  • Rewards for non-Amazon purchases

In addition to the 5% back rate for Amazon purchases, the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card also offers a solid cashback rate on purchases outside of Amazon: 2% back at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers, 1% on other purchases

What to watch out for with the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card

  • Tiered rewards program

Business owners who are looking for simplicity in their card’s rewards program may balk at all the different rewards rate levels offered by the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card.

That said, if do make substantial and frequent purchases through Amazon for your business, its consistent high rewards rate for those purchases can’t be beat.

Plus, it’s nice that the card also offers ongoing rewards for non-Amazon purchases.

  • Short interest-free periods

When choosing to finance a purchase over time without paying interest, know that there are other credit cards that offer much longer promotional timeframes of up to a year or more in which to do that.

However, if your business is facing a short-term cash crunch, opting for a 90-day interest-free financing period can help.

  • Prime membership required

As stated above, your business must be an Amazon Prime or Business Prime member ($119 and $69 a year, respectively) to qualify for the Amazon Business Prime American Express Card.

Amazon does offer another credit card for non-Prime member businesses called the Amazon Business American Express Card.

The main difference is a lower 3% rewards rate or 30-day interest-free financing on Amazon-affiliated purchases. It also has $0 annual fee and comes with the same rewards rate structure on non-Amazon purchases.
