How LendingTree Rates Credit Cards?
Our experts rate credit cards based on several factors including card benefits, bonus offers and independent research. Credit card issuers do not influence or have a say in our card ratings. Read our credit card methodology here. For those who live near BP or Amoco gas stations, the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card is a good discount gas card that also offers unlimited elevated rewards on dining and groceries.
Anyone can join the BP Rewards program, which gives you a $0.05 discount on fuel. And with the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card, you get an additional $0.10 discount, for a total of $0.15 gas discount per gallon. During the first 60 days of card ownership, this rate doubles to $0.30 off per gallon. This is a great discount, and it’s more valuable than the cash back percentage that’s offered on similar gas credit cards.
Another feature of this card that adds to its value is its grocery and dining rewards — you’ll earn 3% cash back in these categories, and there’s no cap on the rewards you can earn. Many cards offer elevated rewards on groceries and restaurants, but put a cap on monthly or quarterly spending.
However, the card’s downsides include BP and Amoco’s availability (its stations aren’t found nationwide) and its high APR. Further, if you use the card in your mobile wallet, you won’t get the higher reward rate.

Sign-up bonus
The card starts you off with 30¢ off per gallon on BP and Amoco fuel purchases in the first 60 days after account opening. That’s an additional 15 cents discount on top of the card’s ongoing 15 cents rebate.
For a household that uses around 50 gallons of gas per month, this sign-up bonus is worth around $15 in addition to the card’s regular rebate. Of course, the value goes up with each additional driver you have, so a two-driver household would save around $30 during the first two months.
While this isn’t as generous as the cards with the best sign-up bonuses, remember that not all credit cards offer sign-up bonuses.
Earn up to 15 cents off each gallon of gas, plus up to 5% cash back
Even after the sign-up bonus ends, you’ll earn 15¢ off per gallon on fuel purchases at participating BP and Amoco stations. Earn 5% cash back on non-fuel BP and Amoco purchases, 3% cash back on grocery store and dining purchases and 1% cash back on other purchases.
This is one of the best rebates you can find for a gas-discount card. In comparison, the Shell | Fuel Rewards® Mastercard® only offers a 10 cents discount on fuel, while the Exxon Mobil Smart Card+™ offers a discount of 10 to 12 cents.
Not to mention, the 3% cash back on grocery store and dining purchases is an excellent rate, on par with some of the best dining credit cards and grocery store credit cards.
No maximum spend limits on elevated reward tiers
The BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card offers an unusual benefit that’s uncommon among tiered cash back credit cards — no cap on how much you can earn in the higher tiers.
This is especially good for individuals or families that spend heavily on dining and groceries. For comparison, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express lets you earn 3% on U.S. gas and U.S. supermarket purchases, but only on the first $6,000 in spending per year (around $500 per month). While some cardholders may not reach this limit, others can easily reach the limit by midyear. With the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card, you’ll earn an unlimited 3% cash back on your grocery purchases.
Flexible rewards
The BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card makes it easy to take advantage of its fuel rebate — you’ll receive it on the spot when you make a fuel purchase at a qualifying gas station.
You’ll also earn flexible points on your 5%, 3% and 1% purchases. Cardholders can redeem points for cash back, gift cards, merchandise, travel and other goods and services. You can redeem points for statement credits as soon as you accumulate $25 (2,500 points) worth.
Rewards do expire after five years of their reward date, but they’re redeemed on a first-in, first-out basis. So as long as you’re regularly redeeming your points, you can feel pretty confident that they won’t expire.
Must live near a BP gas station to receive the fuel benefits
Unfortunately, the fuel discount only applies at BP and Amoco fuel stations, which aren’t available in every city or region. If you’re in an area with varied gas options, or you travel by car and aren’t loyal to any one brand, consider a card that gives elevated rewards on all fuel purchases, like the Citi Custom Cash® Card. It’s not gas station-specific, so you can get cash back on every fuel purchase.
High APR
This isn’t a card you’ll want to keep a balance on — the APR is 31.99%, and it doesn’t have any introductory rates for purchases or balance transfers.
The Citi Custom Cash® Card, meanwhile, comes with a 15-month introductory APR on both purchases and balance transfers. And if you need a longer period of time, you can find both 0% APR credit cards and balance transfer credit cards with intro periods up to 21 months.

Cannot earn elevated rewards with digital wallets
This seems to be unique to the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card, and could be a drawback for those who prefer to add cards to their digital wallets for convenience. According to the card’s terms and conditions, when you use your BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card via a digital wallet (like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay), you automatically receive a 1% cash back rate rather than the higher rate, when applicable.
Many other cards, including the Citi Custom Cash® Card and Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, can be added to your mobile wallet to use and earn rewards.
The price of gas in your area will largely determine whether the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card or a cash back credit card will be the better deal for you. For example, as the data in this table shows, the BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card offers more savings for gas prices under $3 per gallon compared to a card with 5% cash back on gas. It also beats a 3% cash back card when gas prices are below $5 per gallon.
15-cent/gallon discount on gas | 3% cash back on gas | 5% cash back on gas | |
---|---|---|---|
$2 per gallon | $2.25 | $0.90 | $1.50 |
$3 per gallon | $2.25 | $1.35 | $2.25 |
$4 per gallon | $2.25 | $1.80 | $3.00 |
$5 per gallon | $2.25 | $2.25 | $3.75 |

Cardholders also enjoy a long intro APR on new purchases and balance transfers, along with a $0 annual fee.
There’s an annual fee: $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. (see rates & fees) But, it has a solid welcome offer and a variety of useful credits that can easily offset the cost of the annual fee.
The Citi Double Cash® Card also comes with a generous sign-up bonus and a balance transfer intro offer that’s one of the longest currently available.
The BPme Rewards Visa Signature® Card is a good option if you often buy fuel at BP and Amoco gas stations, or you want unlimited rewards on groceries and dining. At the same time, many gas stations, including BP, offer rewards programs that aren’t dependent on a credit card. So if you’re loyal to another brand, you may be able to save a few cents per gallon by joining their rewards program.
Still, because there’s no cap on the rewards you can earn from groceries and dining, this card could also be good for those who spend heavily in either or both categories.
But if you don’t want a card that’s tied to a particular gas station brand, consider a general gas card like the Citi Custom Cash® Card, which is currently our pick for best gas credit card.
