Americans in 100 Largest Metros Carry Median of $18,762 in Non-Mortgage Debt — Here’s a Breakdown by Generation
Credit cards and loans, when managed effectively, can be powerful assets in your financial tool kit. However, the burden of debt can escalate quickly — and factors like age or location can play a big role in how you tackle your debt.
Researchers analyzed over 500,000 anonymized credit reports from LendingTree users in the 100 largest U.S. metros to show how consumers carry non-mortgage debt across generations and where they have the highest balances. Here’s what we found.
Key findings
- Across the generations analyzed, the median non-mortgage debt in the 100 largest metros is $18,762. That’s down 23.9% from $24,668 last year. Gen Xers in these metros have the highest median debt at $26,207 — more than double that of Gen Zers ($12,715). Baby boomers saw the largest year-over-year decline (45.3%).
- Gen Xers in El Paso, Texas, have the highest median non-mortgage debt. The median balance in El Paso for this age group is $40,709. McAllen, Texas, millennials and baby boomers have the highest median debt at $36,043 and $23,045, respectively. And North Port, Fla., Gen Zers have the highest median balance ($20,021).
- Credit card debt is prevalent across generations. In the 100 largest metros, the percentage of those with credit card debt ranges from 70.2% of Gen Zers to 92.6% of baby boomers. Gen Xers in Bridgeport, Conn., carry the most card debt at a median of $8,656. Bridgeport also ranks first for card debt among baby boomers and millennials.
- Over half (51.5%) of Gen Xers carry auto loan debt, with a median balance of $23,350. Millennials aren’t far behind, with 49.1% holding auto loans at a median balance of $21,233. McAllen has the highest auto debt among all generations, with millennials leading the way with a median balance of $31,236.
- Gen Zers are the most likely to have student loan debt, but Gen Xers carry the biggest burden. 38.1% of Gen Zers have student loans, though their median balance is the lowest at just $13,391. In contrast, only 22.5% of Gen Xers hold student debt, but they owe the most, with a median balance of $33,988.

Americans owe a median of $18,762 in non-mortgage debt
In the largest 100 metros, the median non-mortgage debt across all four generations analyzed is $18,762. Last year, that figure was $24,668, meaning non-mortgage debt has fallen 23.9%.
Matt Schulz — LendingTree chief consumer finance analyst and author of “Ask Questions, Save Money, Make More: How to Take Control of Your Financial Life” — says that’s a significant decrease.
“I think it’s a further sign that people are being cautious and looking to firm up their financial foundation amid all the economic uncertainty we’re facing today,” he says. “They’re trying to focus on paying down high-interest debt and building their emergency fund. With that in mind, they may choose to put off bigger-ticket purchases such as cars and kitchen appliances.”
Gen Xers ages 45 to 60 have the highest median debt at $26,207, though that’s down 22.6% from $33,859 last year. Following that:
- Millennials ages 29 to 44: $24,810, down 18.8% from $30,558
- Gen Zers ages 18 to 28: $12,715, down 23.2% from $16,562
- Baby boomers ages 61 to 79: $10,272, down 45.3% from $18,779
Gen Zers (95.1%) have the lowest percentage with non-mortgage debt, while Gen Xers (97.5%) have the highest. Gen Xers also have the highest median debt in three categories: credit cards, auto loans and student loans. Meanwhile, baby boomers have the highest median personal loan debt.
Let’s break that down by generation.
How Gen Z debt breaks down
North Port, Fla., Gen Zers have the highest median non-mortgage debt. Here, the youngest adult generation owes a median of $20,021.
Across the 100 largest metros, Gen Zers owe just $12,715. With 95.1% of Gen Zers owing non-mortgage debt, they’re also the least likely to have it.
By debt type, 70.2% of Gen Zers in the largest 100 metros owe just $1,774 in credit card debt — the lowest for the amount owed and percentage with debt by generation. Three of the five metros where Gen Zers have the highest median credit card debt are in Florida, led by North Port at $3,109.
Unlike our overall look at non-mortgage debt, our by-type median balance data excludes users without that debt.

Schulz believes this is simply because of where Gen Zers are in life. “They’re still young, not far removed from being in college and not yet earning enough money to put a major dent in their student loan debt,” he says.

Managing debt: Top expert tips
Managing multiple debt types can be challenging and stressful, particularly if you owe a lot. To help whittle down your debt, we offer the following advice:
- Get your interest rates down. “High interest rates are a killer when you have significant debt,” Schulz says. “However, you can significantly lower your rates with a 0% balance transfer credit card, a low-interest personal loan or potentially a phone call to your credit card issuer asking for a lower rate. Any of these options can substantially decrease the interest you pay over the life of the balance and the time it takes to pay off the balance.”
- Consider a debt consolidation loan. If your credit isn’t good enough to qualify for a 0% balance transfer card, debt consolidation is another way to roll multiple high-interest debts into a single loan with a lower rate. Just be sure to compare offers and watch out for fees.
- Ruthlessly prioritize. “Smart money management is about prioritization,” Schulz says. “Spend on what matters most, and don’t spend on what doesn’t. That may require some sacrifice and tough decisions, but once you’ve been able to make a major dent in your debt, it’ll have been worth it.”
Methodology
Analysts used over 500,000 anonymized credit reports from LendingTree users who live in the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas (“MSAs”) to calculate the following, aggregated by generation and MSA:
- Median non-mortgage debt balance regardless of whether a user had any debt
- Percentage of users who had any debt or debt of a specific type
- Median balances for those with active balances for those debt types
The credit reports are from Oct. 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. Non-mortgage debt includes credit cards, auto loans, personal loans, student loans and other debts.
We defined generations based on the following age groups in 2025:
- Generation Z: 18 to 28
- Millennial: 29 to 44
- Generation X: 45 to 60
- Baby boomer: 61 to 79
Data also includes the final quarter of 2024, which means that all age groups were one year younger in 2024.
