Who is the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® best for?

If you have a large amount of high-interest credit card debt, you may want to consider transferring it to a card that doesn’t charge a balance transfer fee, like the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard®. The card also offers a rewards program and comes with a $0 annual fee.

We highlight the pros and cons of the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® and show how it compares to similar balance transfer credit cards to help determine if it’s the right fit for you.

What we like about the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard®

  • Low ongoing APR

With the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard®, you’ll get a low ongoing 13.50 to 18.00% APR based on your credit worthiness.

  • Long balance transfer window

The First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® comes with a balance transfer window — which is the amount of time you have to transfer your balance — of 90 days. Typically, issuers require cardholders to make the transfer within the first 60 days of account opening.

  • Rewards on every purchase

First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® cardholders earn 2 points per $1 spent on everyday purchases, including gas, groceries, household goods, and more. Earn 1 point per $1 spent on other eligible purchases. There’s no limit to how many rewards points you can earn, and your points never expire. *Rewards points are not accrued for returned purchases, balance transfers, finance charges, fees, cash advances, purchases of cash or cash equivalents, (prepaid debit cards or other stored value/reloadable cards), interest charges, gambling chips, lottery tickets, traveler's checks, or insurance. Rewards points have no cash value until redeemed. Additionally, earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend at least $3,000 in the first 60 days.

Rewards points can be redeemed for merchandise, gift cards, travel, cash or events and experiences.

But keep in mind, when you transfer a balance, it’s best to focus on paying off the transferred amount in full before earning rewards — which could ultimately lead to more debt.

  • Limited fees

While the majority of balance transfer credit cards charge balance transfer fees ranging from 3% to 5% of the amount of each transfer, the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® is one of the few cards that charges a $0 balance transfer fee.

The card also comes with a $0 annual fee and a $0 foreign transaction fee.

What to look out for with the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard®

  • No intro APR on purchases or balance transfers

Because the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard® does not offer an intro APR on purchases or balance transfers, you will be subject to interest charges at a 13.50 to 18.00% APR based on your credit worthiness if you carry a balance on your card from month to month.

That said, the APR is very reasonable — especially if you qualify for the lowest rate.

  • Credit union membership required

To apply for the First Tech Choice Rewards World Mastercard®, you must first become a member of First Tech FCU.

There are a numbers of ways to be eligible for membership, including having a family member or household member who is already a First Tech member, working for (or having a family member who works for an eligible partner company or for the State of Oregon, working or living in Lane County, Oregon, or belonging to the Computer History Museum or Financial Fitness Association.
