What to look for when choosing a card for international travel

When choosing a credit card to use abroad, you’ll first want to establish that the card offers worldwide acceptance — this means ensuring the card uses chip-and-PIN technology, which is often required in countries outside of the U.S.

Secondly, you should make sure the card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, which often run around 3% of the amount of each transaction. Additionally, the card should offer rewards on travel purchases, as well as a variety of redemption and/or transfer options for those rewards.

The following cards meet those criteria and more.

Introductory APR N/A
Annual Fee $95

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is our top hotel credit card pick, since it doesn’t restrict you to earning or using rewards at one particular hotel brand — as many hotel rewards cards do. The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card charges an annual fee of $95.

Along with 2 miles per dollar on every purchase, every day, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card lets cardholders enjoy a one-time bonus of 60,000 miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening, equal to $600 in travel.

Plus, every four years, receive a $100 statement credit to cover your Global Entry application or $85 to cover your TSA Precheck application.

Venture miles can be redeemed for hotel stays, airfare, car rentals, ride-sharing apps, cruises and more. They can also be transferred to a variety of airline and hotel loyalty partners, including Accor Live Limitless, Air France KLM, JetBlue TrueBlue, Wyndham Rewards and more at a rate of 1:1, 2:1.5 or 2:1, depending on the transfer partner.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has a loyal following despite competing with other rewards cards that offer higher points on everyday purchases and more benefits.

That may be because it offers cardholders an easy way to earn flat cashback rewards and makes it simple to redeem them via Purchase Eraser or direct booking with miles.

With this card, you don’t have to remember different spending categories, nor are you wedded to a single hotel or airline loyalty program.

Instead, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card has an easy and understandable redemption platform where you can use rewards toward various travel options, including flights, hotels and rental cars.

However, this card doesn’t offer some of the valuable benefits you may expect to see from a travel rewards card, like trip delay insurance, trip interruption insurance and lost/delayed baggage insurance.

International travel credit card FAQs

Foreign transaction fees, also known as foreign exchange fees, are charges incurred by the cardholder when they use their credit card to purchase items outside of the U.S. Foreign transaction fees are typically 3% of the amount of each transaction or $5, whichever is greater. However, many travel rewards cards don’t charge these fees, so when traveling abroad, it’s best to have one of those cards in your wallet.

With chip-and-PIN credit cards, also referred to as EMV cards, credit card data is stored on a tiny computer chip instead of a magnetic strip — making the cards more secure. Additionally, the cards require a four digit PIN instead of a signature and come with a small microprocessor chip embedded in the credit card. While credit cards that offer chip-and-PIN technology are typically required abroad, they are gaining in popularity in the U.S.

Each of the travel rewards cards in this post require good to excellent credit. According to FICO, this means your credit score must range from 740 to 799 for good credit and 800 to 850 for excellent credit. Keep in mind that issuers also use other parameters to determine an applicant’s creditworthiness, such as income, length of credit history and credit utilization ratio.

International customer service varies by card issuer. Just know, when you call customer service from abroad, you will call a different number than if you were calling from the U.S. Here are the international customer service contact numbers for the following credit card issuers:
