Due to their inexperience behind the wheel, teen drivers tend to pay the highest rate of any age demographic.

However, teen drivers can often cut their car insurance costs considerably by getting added to a parent’s policy. While there still will be a rate increase, it should be cheaper than if parent and child had separate policies.

After a DUI, Texas drivers are expected to carry an SR-22, a document proving you have the minimum required liability insurance, for two years.

Auto insurance companies consider drivers with a DUI to be high risk. Some do not offer SR-22 filing, and some may cancel your policy.

If your insurer is not cooperative in helping with an SR-22, take the opportunity to compare car insurance quotes and see if you can find a better company.

Texas law requires drivers to have 30/60/25 car insurance at a minimum. This means they need at least these amounts of bodily injury and property damage liability car insurance coverage.

Minimum coverage for car insurance in San Antonio

Coverage typeMinimum amount needed
Bodily injury liability (per person)$30,000
Bodily injury liability (per accident)$60,000
Personal property liability$25,000

Although this amount of car insurance meets Texas car insurance requirements, it may not be enough if you cause an accident that results in major injuries or damage. It also won’t cover damage to your own car.

Consider raising your liability limits to avoid a financial crisis, and investing in full-coverage car insurance to protect your car and yourself.
