How much is mobile home insurance in Louisiana?
Mobile home insurance in Louisiana typically ranges from less than $1,000 to more than $2,000 a year. The exact amount you pay depends on factors like:
- Your location
- The age and size of your mobile home
- Your recent insurance and credit history
- The amount of coverage you need
Most insurance companies give you a better rate if your home is tied down or anchored to its foundation. Skirting and safety rails on your deck or patio can also help bring down your price.
Each insurance company treats these factors differently, and their rates vary by customer. Comparing home insurance quotes from a few companies helps you find the best rate for your mobile or manufactured home.
A few Louisiana insurance companies give you a discount for strengthening your mobile home’s roof. It’s available to manufactured homes that are built after 1994 and have roofs rated as Fortified by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS). Assurant, American Modern and Ocean Harbor are among the companies offering it in 2026.
What mobile homeowners are seeing in Louisiana right now
Louisiana mobile and manufactured home owners are feeling many of the same insurance challenges as other homeowners. Insurance is getting more expensive and harder to find.
Rising claims costs led some companies to leave the state or insure fewer mobile homes. The state also made it easier for insurance companies to drop customers by loosening protections of the so-called three-year rule.
Before the changes, your insurance company couldn’t drop you after you’d been with it for at least three years. Now they can drop some longtime customers and any customer who started with them after Aug. 1, 2024.
If you’re having a hard time finding a company to insure your mobile home, ask an insurance agent about Louisiana Citizens. The state’s insurer of last resort provides coverage for homes that standard home insurance companies won’t insure.
How does mobile home insurance work in Louisiana?
Mobile home insurance covers your home and belongings for damage and theft. It also covers medical costs for an injured visitor and certain other expenses.
Here’s how the main coverages in a standard Louisiana mobile home policy work.
Dwelling coverage
Your policy’s dwelling coverage pays to fix damage from a covered disaster like a fire. Unless you’re on the coast, standard policies also cover wind and hail. If you’re on the coast, you may need stand-alone windstorm insurance from Louisiana Citizens, the state’s insurer of last resort.
For mortgages, lenders usually require you to insure your home at its replacement value. You can insure your home for a lower amount if you own it outright or have a low loan balance. However, doing so may leave you short on funds to rebuild after a disaster.
Other structures
This covers things like a detached garage, shed and other structures not attached to your home. It’s often offered in amounts that range from 5% to 10% of your dwelling limit. You can usually get a higher limit if you have more structures to protect.
Personal property
Also known as contents coverage, personal property covers your belongings for damage or theft. Most companies insure your possessions at their actual cash value, after age and wear. You can often upgrade to replacement cost coverage for more protection.
Companies offer this in default amounts that range from 40% to 60% of your dwelling limit, but you can often adjust this. Creating an itemized list of your possessions and their value is a good way to figure out exactly how much coverage you need.
Loss of use
Loss of use covers temporary living expenses if a covered disaster forces you from your home. This is often offered in amounts that range from 10% to 20%, but you can typically ask for more. An amount that represents at least six months’ worth of rent in your area is a good start. If you don’t see this coverage on a quote, ask why.
Personal liability
Personal liability covers injuries and damage you cause to other people or their property. This includes injuries blamed on your neglect.
Many companies offer a $100,000 liability limit by default, and it usually doesn’t cost much to add more. A higher liability limit helps prevent a particularly costly mishap from draining your savings.
Guest medical payments
This covers medical treatment for an injured guest, regardless of who causes the injury. It’s typically offered in amounts ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Higher limits are generally better, but any amount within this range is usually enough.
What does Louisiana mobile home insurance not cover?
Louisiana mobile home insurance usually does not cover floods. One of the few exceptions is Assurant, which offers add-on flood protection.
With other companies, you usually need separate or extra insurance for risks that standard policies don’t automatically cover. These include:
- Floods: Most flood insurance is purchased through the government-run National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Your mobile home has to be anchored to a permanent foundation to get it.
- Valuable items: Mobile home insurance typically limits coverage for valuables like jewelry, antiques and firearms to about $1,500 or less. However, most companies offer add-on coverage for items worth more than this.
- Water backups: A standard mobile home insurance policy usually doesn’t cover damage from a sewer or drainage backup. Fortunately, it doesn’t cost much to add coverage for mishaps like these.
Compare Louisiana mobile home insurance companies
It’s just as important to get the right insurance coverage for your mobile home as it is to get a cheap rate. Consider these tips as you compare your mobile home insurance quotes.
- Check the details: It’s OK if the dwelling and personal property limits vary slightly by company. However, the information listed about you and your home should be accurate in each quote.
- Compare apples to apples: The coverage options and deductibles in each quote should match so you’re making a fair comparison. Then you can consider higher deductibles to bring your rate down.
- Ask about discounts: Most companies will automatically apply eligible discounts to your quote based on the information you provide. But asking about any other discounts can help make sure none get overlooked.

Frequently asked questions
Manufactured homes are mobile homes built after June 15, 1976. Mobile homes built after this date meet construction and safety standards created by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The term “mobile home,” however, is still often used to describe a manufactured home.
HUD established wind zone ratings for manufactured homes in 1994. A manufactured home with a HUD Wind Zone 1 rating is designed to withstand winds of up to 70 mph. The highest rating of HUD Wind Zone 3 is for mobile homes built for winds up to 110 mph.
Foremost and American Modern insure both older mobile homes and newer ones in Louisiana. Neither company has age restrictions on the homes they insure. However, they do generally require your home to be in at least fair condition.
